Softball Suffers Doubleheader Loss at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball program lost its first games of the season on Wednesday as the Bombers dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Alfred University, 14-3 and 3-2. Ithaca is now 4-2 on the season, while Alfred moves to 9-2.

GAME ONE: ALFRED 14, ITHACA 3 (5 innings)

Ithaca came out swinging in the first inning with senior Gabby Laccona placing a double down the left field line, her first double of the season. Laccona would later score thanks to a sacrifice fly from junior Julia Loffredo. Alfred put three runs on the board in the first, putting the Bombers at a two-run deficit heading into the second inning.

The second started with a bang as junior Daniella Mulvey sent a homerun flying on the left field side, her first of the season. Mulvey would be the only Bomber to cross the plate this time around, mirroring the outcome of the first inning. The Saxons strengthened their lead in the second at bat of the contest and saw four runs cross home plate.

A triple to right field would put sophomore Allison Dell'Orto in scoring position and was the Bombers' only run of the inning, with the help of Loffredo. Loffredo singled to the shortstop in her at-bat to push Dell'Orto home, her second RBI of the matchup. This was the last run on the scoreboard for Ithaca and Alfred would continue to dominate by racking up seven runs over the course of the next two innings.

A tough loss for the Bombers, the team finished with six hits and senior pitcher Beth Fleming was handed her first loss of the season.

GAME TWO: ALFRED 3, ITHACA 2

The final contest of the night proved to be a game of strong defense on both sides with only a handful of runs crossing the plate in seven innings. Ithaca once again got on the board early with a single run in the first.

A double from Dell'Orto started things off and hinted at a promising effort for the Bombers. Mulvey recorded her second hit of the day with a single this time around, which would send Dell-Orto hustling to home plate. No runs were scored for Alfred in the bottom of the inning thanks to a few routine plays for the Ithaca infielders.

An uneventful second at-bat for the Bombers put them in a two-run hole as the Saxons showed off an aggressive offense. No runs scored for either side in the third and Ithaca would tie it up in the fourth.

Graduate student Haley Gaffney slammed a homerun to right field to take away Alfred's lead with her first of the season.

A solid effort from the Bombers was not enough to push past the Saxons and Alfred would score in the sixth to solidify the win. Sophomore pitcher Riley Piromalli took her first loss of the campaign and Alfred's Jessica Wilcox picked up her fifth. Ithaca's record sits at 4-2 early on in the season.

The Bombers will play a set of games against Union College on Saturday, April 10, at Kostrinsky Field.
