No. 10 Women's Lacrosse Rides Defense to Season Sweep of No. 14 Herons

Geneva, N.Y. - It wasn't the comfortable win that the 10th-ranked Ithaca Women's Lacrosse team had grown accustomed to, but another strong defensive performance propelled the Bombers to a 9-7 win over No. 14 William Smith. The win was the second in as many days for Ithaca against the Herons and gives Ithaca a comfortable lead in the Liberty League standings as league play heats up.

How it Happened: Ithaca again jumped out to a considerable lead early on. Senior Jacqui Hallack led the early surge with a pair of goals to continue her standout season. The Bombers start was capped by senior Megan Motkowski's goal off an assist from senior Madison Boutureira with 1:10 to go in the half. William Smith took advantage of a stellar day in the draw control circle to get two quick goals before the half and cut Ithaca's lead to 7-4.

The Herons continued to put game pressure on Ithaca early in the second half with two straight goals from Maddie Montgomery. Motkowski netted her second of the day with 19:42 to go in the second half to give Ithaca cushion, but Montgomery again pulled William Smith back within one. In the minutes that followed the Bombers defense and ride game stood tall, forcing numerous failed clears and forcing the Herons to scramble late into the shot clock. Off a William Smith turnover, senior Alexa Ritchie put the nail in the coffin off a pass from senior Alex Rabb and the Bombers won their first draw of the second half to run out the clock.

Game Leaders: Hallack and Motkowski led the way on offense with two goals apiece. Five other Bombers found the back of the net and five Bombers registered an assist.

On defense, senior Molly Nodiff forced two turnovers for Ithaca. The story of the day on defense was senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Schade having her best performance of the season stopping 11 of the 18 shots she saw in 60 minutes of action.

Up Next: Ithaca will travel to Liberty League opponent Union on Friday, April 9. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
