Rochester Sweeps Baseball on a Pair of Walk-Offs

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team suffered a pair of tough losses at the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon, 9-8 and 7-6, in a non-league doubleheader. Ithaca is now 4-2 on the season, while Rochester improves to 5-2.

UR won both games in walk-off fashion, coming away with the 9-8 win in the opener in 11 innings, and winning on a single in the seventh inning of the night cap with the bases loaded.

Senior Garrett Callaghan went 6-for-9 in the doubleheader and hit for the cycle in Game Two. Callaghan drove in eight runs on the day and scored three more. He also had two doubles and two home runs. The last Bomber to hit for the cycle was Andrew Bailey on April 28, 2018.

GAME ONE: ROCHESTER 9, ITHACA 8 (11 innings)

The Bombers found themselves in a back-and-fourth battle early on in the opener. IC jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the second inning as Callaghan drove in first-year Louis Fabbo with a groundout in the first and sophomore Gil Merod scored in the second on a stolen base.

UR took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third, but the Bombers put up five runs in the top of the fourth to go back on top, 7-3. Fabbo drove in two runs on a single, which brough in Merod and senior Sam Kinum, and then Callaghan blasted a three-run home run with Fabbo and graduate student Buzz Shirley on base.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Yellowjackets mounted their own five-run frame to regain the edge at 8-7. IC responded once again in the sixth as Callaghan plated another run (Fabbo) with a double.

As the game went to extra innings, Ithaca loaded the bases in the top of the 10th but was unable to push a run across.

In the bottom of the 11th, Rochester won the game on a sacrifice fly.

Fabbo and Shirley each went 3-for-5, while Callaghan was 2-for-5 with five RBI. Merord also had a multi-hit opener.

Shirley earned the start on the mound for IC and surrendered eight runs over 4.2 innings pitched in the no decision. Sophomore Garrett Bell took the loss in six innings of work with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO: ROCHESTER 7, ITHACA 6

Ithaca once again held a lead early on in Game Two as senior Jack Lynch cranked a three-run home run in the top of the first with Callaghan and first-year Kyle Gordon on base.

Rochester knotted things up at 3-3 in the bottom of the second, but Callaghan put IC back on top, 5-3, with a two-run shot in the top half of the third.

Heading to the seventh, IC led, 5-4, and added another run to its edge with a bases loaded single by Callaghan to complete the cycle.

The Bombers were unable to hold onto the lead, however, as Rochester pushed home three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with another win.

Junior Kyle Lambert started for IC and went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. First-year Dom Trippi took the loss as he was responsible for all three runs in the seventh. First-year Nate Scott also appeared in the game.

Tomorrow's doubleheader at home against Rochester has been postponed due to rain in the forecast. IC is scheduled to play Cortland on March 30 in Cortland.
