Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Thomas Edson, '21

No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Wins Season-Opener Against No. 23 Cortland, 18-11

Ithaca, N.Y. - The 12th-ranked Ithaca College Women's Lacrosse team used a strong second half to pull away from archrival No. 23 SUNY Cortland for an 18-11 win. It was the squad's first game at Higgins Stadium in 385 days, and their first game since their 2020 season was cut short 371 days ago.

Ithaca never trailed in the game, took a 10-8 lead into halftime, and outscored the Red Dragons 8-3 in the second half to move to 1-0 on the season. The Red Dragons fell to 0-1 on the year with the loss.

How it Happened: The teams traded goals in the opening nine minutes to make the score 3-3 before Ithaca went on a three-goal run to build a 6-3 lead with 15:27 left in the half. The teams alternated mini-runs for the remainder of the half and Ithaca went into halftime up two behind five first-half goals from senior Jacqui Hallack.

The Bombers opened the second half on a 5-1 run on goals from five different players. Cortland scored two consecutive goals to pull within 15-11 and force an Ithaca timeout with 13:40 remaining. After the timeout, the Bombers defense shut down the visitors the rest of the way while the offense scored the final three goals of the game.

Game Leaders: Hallack led the way for Ithaca with a career-high nine points, tying her career-best with seven goals. Senior Alexa Ritchie chipped in with six points on four goals and two assists. First-year Maizy Veitch found the net for her first career goal in her first game as a Bomber. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Schade recorded seven saves in net, while senior Rachel Rosenberg led the defense with four caused turnovers.

Next Up: The Bombers return to Higgins Stadium for their next game against No. 13 Brockport on Saturday, March 20. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
