TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team lost 3-1 to St. Lawrence in the Liberty League championship match at ECAV Stadium on the campus of RPI on Sunday afternoon. The Bombers showed their resiliency but couldn't mount a second half comeback.
St. Lawrence broke the scoreless deadlock in the 12
th minute as they made the most of a turnover by the defensive backline of the Bombers. Max Mogul made a few nice dribbles to afford himself space and he slid a though ball to Michael McDougal who slotted the ball into the lower left past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
Lee Folger. McDougal put enough pace on his shot attempt that it didn't give Folger enough time to put a palm to the ball.
After the goal was scored Ithaca began to establish possession of its own in the attacking third of the field and nearly netted an equalizer in the 34
th minute but Alex Cabecca's shot attempt was corralled and saved by Ben Woelfinger.
The Bombers went into the halftime break trailing 1-0 but held the 7-6 shot advantage and 2-1 edge in corner kicks. St. Lawrence did place three of their shot attempts on goal frame forcing
Lee Folger into two saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Saints doubled up their lead and made it 2-0 at the 53:50 mark. Marvin Sibanda struck a long ball from about midfield and Max Mogul split two Ithaca defenders to get on the other end of the pass and he scored his third goal of the season to put his team up 2-0.
Ithaca kept fighting and showed their resiliency as they often have this season making it 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining. The Bombers saw the opposing goalkeeper far outside of his usual six-yard box and
Christopher Ogden ripped a shot from about 45-yards out and it went into the back of the net.
With the Bombers controlling possession and looking to tie it up, St. Lawrence was able to spring a counterattack and a defensive lapse from
Colin Shust as he was caught tackling Marvin Sibanda within the six-yard box. Shust was shown a red card and Marvin Sibanda converted on the penalty kick to give his team the 3-1 lead.
The two-goal lead was enough for St. Lawrence as they milked the clock and possession to win their 17
th Liberty League conference title. The Saints were the underdogs in the tournament as the No. 5 seed, they also knocked off No. 4 Vassar College and No. 1 RPI enroute to the conference championship.
The Ithaca College men's soccer team likely concluded their season with a record of 8-6-6.
