Women’s Basketball Posts Convincing 63-43 Win Over SUNY Geneseo

ITHACA, N.Y. – Three Bombers finished in double figures for the Ithaca College women's basketball team on Tuesday evening as they dominated SUNY Geneseo, finishing with a 63-43 home win. The stellar IC defense forced 30 turnovers and limited the Knights to just 16-of-45 shooting. This hard-fought game was defined by the second quarter, where the Bombers outscored the Knights 20-6 in the second 10-minute period. The non-conference victory pushes Ithaca's overall record to 4-1 while Geneseo drops to 3-2 on the 2021-22 season.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Bombers had a balanced scoring attack on Tuesday with three finishing in double figures including a 15-point effort from Grace Cannon. She filled the stat sheet with nine rebounds and five steals in 25 minutes.
  • Also scoring in double figures for the Bombers was Camryn Coffey (13) and Megan Yawman (12), who also contributed five assists and four steals.
  • Lindsey Albertelli anchored the defense with eight rebounds and three steals, while Cara Volpe was incredibly efficient offensively, shooting 75% from the field and adding five assists.
  • The Bombers shot 8-of-20 from downtown and capitalized on the Knights' turnovers scoring 35 points off the Geneseo errors, including 14 points that were netted on the fast break.
  • The Bombers defense was lockdown from beyond the arc, not allowing a single three from the Knights all night. Three players had at least five turnovers for Geneseo, including guard Mackenzie Reigle, who led her team with seven turnovers.
How it Happened
  • Ithaca picked up right where they left off against Keuka and jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Megan Yawman and Cara Volpe who scored in the first minute of play. Geneseo then responded with a 16-4 run to end the first quarter with a four-point lead.
  • The Knights' success was short-lived as Ithaca opened the second quarter with a 17-2 scoring spurt to take the lead. Grace Cannon did it all, registering three rebounds, a pair of quick steals to go along with two baskets. Camryn Coffey and Megan Yawman then converted on three's to extend IC's lead. Geneseo shot just 2-for-11 while the Bombers connected on 8-of-17. Megan Yawman scored 11 points in her first minutes of first half play, guiding Ithaca to a 32-22 lead at the break.
  • There was a change of pace once again in the first five minutes of the second half, both teams trading baskets as IC's lead was cut back down to just two. A pair of buckets from Melissa Buxton and a Grace Cannon and-one pushed the Ithaca lead back to seven. A late three from Alex Heuwetter extended the Bombers' momentum as they entered the final quarter of play up by ten.
  • Megan Yawman and Grace Cannon spearheaded a commanding 8-1 run to start the fourth quarter, which was once again prompted by the Bombers' defense. IC forced 12 turnovers in this period and didn't allow a single shot by Geneseo for over seven minutes. Another trey from Alex Heuwetter with just over a minute left to play secured the 63-43 victory.
The Bombers will look to continue rolling when they return to action on Friday in a road matchup against Vassar College at 5:30 p.m. The Brewers own a 0-5 overall record as they fell to NYU in their last time out (84-64). IC will travel to Annandale-on-Hudson on Saturday (12/3) to take on the Bard College Raptors at the Stevenson Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
