ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College field hockey team continued to roll in its home outing on Wednesday night, October 6 after shutting out Oneonta, 4-0, at Higgins Stadium. The 9-2 Bombers have now extended their winning streak to six games. SUNY Oneonta falls to 2-6 on the season with the road loss.
Â
Ithaca had its way with the SUNYAC program from start to finish. The Bombers offense was humming all game with 23 total shots, in which 16 of them were on-goal. While only surrendering one goal in the previous five contests, IC's defense continued to shine on the back end. The unit didn't skip a beat, limiting the Red Dragons to just one shot-on-goal and two shots in total. Â
Â
Headlining the offense was striker
Samantha Horowitz. The senior was the star of the show, culminating two scores and totaling seven shots-on-goal. She led the team in both of those statistical categories. Horowitz's supporting cast executed at a high level too.
Morgan Mullen continued to dazzle in her 2021 campaign, scoring one goal and an assist in the contest. Senior
Victoria Sestito had a standout performance as well, tallying her first goal of the season.
Â
On the defensive side, goalkeeper
Macy Brandwein did her job and finished with one save on just two shots faced. The senior now has three shutouts in the net this season.
Â
The Bombers looked sharp from the opening whistle, scoring just 1:49 into the game. After a deflection off of the Oneonta goalkeeper, Mullen corralled the loose ball and slapped a shot into the back right corner of the cage. The reigning Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week has now racked up a team-high seven goals on the season.
Â
IC doubled up the advantage in the 14
th minute when Sestito finished off a backdoor pass from
Jacqueline Mirabile and labeled home a shot to give her team a comfortable 2-0 edge.
Â
The Bombers did not falter in the second half, as they quickly roared to a 4-0 lead in opening minutes of the third quarter. Horowitz was the brunt of the offensive attack, netting two consecutive goals in the 32
nd and 33
rd minutes.
Natalie Descalso and Mullen were credited with the assists on the scoring plays, respectively.
Â
With the dominant victory, IC is on pace to finally cracking the NFHCA Top 20 team poll after already receiving 74 votes at the beginning of the week.
Â
Ithaca College will look to keep the momentum going and inch closer to a conference title on Saturday, October 9 when the squad travels to Geneva, N.Y. to take on William Smith College. The Liberty League showdown is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
