GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team tallied a pair of fourth quarter goals, including the game-winning with just 10 seconds remaining, to post a 2-1 Liberty League road victory at William Smith College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Ithaca extends its winning streak to seven straight and is now 10-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Liberty League. IC has now won three consecutive matchups against William Smith after the Herons won 26 of the last 29 contests.
The Bombers had shut out their previous three opponents and held a 215-minute scoreless streak until William Smith tallied a goal 6:47 into the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
IC was not able to manufacture much offense over the opening 30 minutes, as the Bombers recorded just four shots, including two shots on goal. Despite taking just four shots, the IC defense held William Smith to three attempts.
After being held shotless in the third quarter, Ithaca turned on the offensive pressure over the final 15 minutes of action. The Bombers were awarded four penalty corners and took five shots.
Ithaca appeared to break up the shutout with under 10 minutes remaining, but after a quick conference by the officials the goal was disallowed.
Despite the deflation of the no-goal, IC capitalized after its third corner of the period.
Morgan Mullen poked the ball away from a Heron defender near the top of the circle. Mullen took two touches toward the William Smith goal and with the Herons goalkeeper charging at her, sent a pass over to
Samantha Horowitz, who swept it into the open cage to tie the game. It was Horowitz's sixth goal of the season.
Ithaca earned its final penalty corner in the final minute.
Jacqueline Mirabile inserted the corner to the top of the circle where Mullen stopped it, took one touch inside the arc and passed off to
Victoria Sestito on her left. Sestito fired a shot toward the near post, but the offering was redirected by Mirabile toward the penalty spot. Sestito's strike got the William Smith goalie to dive at her near post. The dive allowed
Grace Ziehnert an open opportunity and her shot went inside the left post for the game-winning goal came with just 10 seconds remaining.
Macy Brandwein earned another win for IC in goal as she made one save on the day.
The Bombers return to Higgins Stadium on October 12 for a 4 p.m. non-conference game against New Paltz.
