ITHACA, N.Y. – On the heels of standout performances, Ithaca College had five student-athletes announced on the Liberty League Weekly Awards for the week of October 4.
Morgan Mullen and
Macy Brandwein represented the field hockey program with Mullen named Offensive Performer of the Week and Brandwein named Defensive Performer of the Week. Football and men's soccer had Defensive Performer of the Week in
Ben Stola and
Lee Folger, while
Claire Reader of the women's soccer team picked up Rookie of the Week. In addition, four others landed on the weekly honor roll.
Field Hockey Offensive Performer of the Week – Morgan Mullen
Morgan Mullen netted the game-winning goal with just over three minutes left in regulation against Rochester on Sunday in a 1-0 win. Mullen also assisted on the lone goal during IC's 1-0 mid-week victory over Keuka.
Field Hockey Defensive Performer of the Week – Macy Brandwein
Macy Brandwein made her return to the lineup after missing three games and notched her second shutout of the season against Rochester on Sunday. Brandwein made five saves in the win, including three in the fourth quarter.
Football Defensive Performer of the Week – Ben Stola
Ben Stola recorded seven total tackles, a sack and forced fumble during Ithaca's 28-21 home win over Hobart on Saturday in a top 25 contest. Stola notched four solo tackles and a 10-yard sack which put Hobart at 2nd and 20. On the next play, Hobart was intercepted, and IC returned the pick for 29 yards to set up a touchdown.
Men's Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week – Lee Folger
Folger had another pair of outstanding performances this week between the pipes for Ithaca College. He tallied two shutouts against Hobart College and then St. Lawrence with a total of nine saves, which included a season-high six against the Statesman. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native has a 0.22 goals against average this season in 409:11 minutes of action.
Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week – Claire Reader
The sophomore goalkeeper tallied her fourth shutout of the season in Saturday's 1-0 victory over No. 23 St. Lawrence University. She faced a season-high 17 shots and recorded six saves. She was equally impressive against No. 7 William Smith where
she made a season-best eight saves.
Liberty League Honor Roll
A.J. Wingfield threw for 221 yards on 17-for-21 passing and one touchdown and also ran for a touchdown on a 27-yard carry. Wingfield's touchdown run gave the Bombers a 7-0 lead against Hobart, and his 30-yard touchdown pass to
Andrew Vito in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winning score as Ithaca defeated Hobart, 28-21, in a top 25 matchup.
Zackary Dewitt scored what turned out to be the game-winner in Saturday's 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence University. After a midfield tackle that gained possession for the Bombers,
Jonathan Kyriakidis was sent on the counter attack thanks to a through ball and he found
Zackary Dewitt who calmly chipped the ball passed the keeper for his first collegiate goal.
Christopher Ogden rose to the occasion and curled a beautiful free kick attempt into the bottom right corner of the net. The scoring effort proved to be the game-winner for the Bombers as they held on for the 1-0 victory over Hobart College as part of a 2-0 week for IC.
The sophomore middle has really come on in the last few matches as
Jamie Koopman finished with a season-best and match-high 17 kills as she was the top hitter for Ithaca College against Bowdoin College. Koopman has begun coming into form finishing with double-digit hitting efforts in three of the last four contests.
