ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Vassar College at Carp Wood Field on Saturday. Persistent rain earlier in the week and more precipitation last night into the early afternoon created less than ideal field conditions, but the Bombers battled through that adversity to come away with the victory and finish off the regular season with a 13-3 record and 7-2 mark in the Liberty League.
The early minutes of the contest were a battle to maintain possession and create any scoring chances with the elements all 22 players were dealing with. Vassar was the first team to establish any offensive opportunities, as the Brewers fired off four shots – two on goal and saved by
Claire Reader – over the opening 18:11.
After IC's first chance at the 22:14 mark, the Bombers put one on goal just over two minutes later, which was saved.
It wasn't until the clock dwindled below six minutes remaining in the half before the Bombers got on the board for the eventual game-winner. A give-and-go between
Megan Buttinger and
Alex Epifani led to the tally as Buttinger corralled the ball, sent it to Epifani, who then flicked a short through ball back to Buttinger to create space and the20-yard strike beat the Vassar goalkeeper into the lower right corner.
In the second half, IC outshot, 6-5. Three of the Brewers' shots were on target – all of which were turned away by Reader, who finished with five saves on the day and her eighth shutout.
There were four corners in the game – all of which occurred in the second half. Vassar was awarded the final corner of the contest with less than two minutes remaining but was unable to capitalize on it.
The Bombers travel to William Smith College for the Liberty League Championship next weekend. Ithaca will play the winner of Union and Vassar at 1:30 p.m. on November 6.
