Women’s Soccer Clinch Liberty League Tournament Berth with Win Over RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team will once again be tasting postseason action after clinching its place in the Liberty League Conference Tournament on Saturday with a 2-0 road win over RPI. With two games left in the regular season, the Bombers currently sit second within the Liberty League with key matches against RIT and Vassar College coming up this week.

The Bombers struck first in the 29th minute on a beautiful individual effort from Megan Buttinger. She dribbled past an opposing defender outside of the 18-yard box and struck the ball into the upper right corner for her third goal this season. IC nearly doubled up its lead with back-to-back shot attempts in the 35th minute. With the team pressing, Clare Sunderland attempted a shot that was saved by Maya Kessler and at the 35:03 mark Rosie Bostian ripped a shot from inside the box that was once again saved by the Engineers goalkeeper.

Ithaca carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime as they also held a 11-2 advantage in shot attempts and forced Maya Kessler into seven saves within the first 45 minutes of play. The second half was a bit tighter with the schools trading scoring chances.

The Bombers added an insurance effort to make it 2-0 at the 72:06 mark of the second half. Kelsey Espenhorst settled the ball after Rosie Bostian headed the ball into the crossbar and Espenhorst sliced the ball into the back of the net on the second chance opportunity. It was the fourth goal of the season by Kelsey Espenhorst, which is a collegiate-best during her career for Ithaca.

Sophomore goalkeeper Claire Reader made a pair of sprawling saves and finished with four total for her sixth shutout of the season.

Ithaca College (11-3, 5-2 Liberty League) will play its final two matches of the season at the friendly confines of Carp Wood Field beginning with RIT on Tuesday, October 26. First touch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
