ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's swimming team and diving team opened its 2021-22 season hosting a tri-meet on Saturday against SUNY Brockport and Buffalo State. The Bombers defeated SUNY Brockport 230-67 and Buffalo State by a 228-60 team score in the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium.
Graduate student
Morgan Hoffman-Smith picked up right where she left off in previous seasons and won the 1000-yard freestyle event besting her teammates
Emily Shorb and
Erin Kiley. Hoffman-Smith finished the event in 11:12.42, followed by
Emily Shorb who took second at 11:20.28 and
Erin Kiley who took third with a recorded time of 11:31.64.
Morgan Hoffman-Smith won her second event of the day in the 500-yard freestyle posting a time of 5:26.97. Right behind her again were teammates in the likes of
Erin Kiley who finished second in 5:37.37 and
Josephine Holman scored a third-place finish with a time of 5:39.66
The Bombers once again finished one, two and three in the 200-yard freestyle.
Ava Palfreyman won her first collegiate event by finishing the event with a time of 2:04.39. Right behind her were teammates
Josephine Holman and
Lauren Brady who finished the freestyle with times of 2:05.36 and 2:09.54, respectively. IC continued its knack of outstanding finishes in the 100-yard backstroke.
Katie Champagne bested all other finishers with a time of 1:02.73 and
Anna Rubino finished second with a finals time of 1:07.86. Third place went to
Josephine Holman as it was a photo finish with her coming in right behind Rubino with a time of 1:07.96.
First year
Abigail Ignagni won her first collegiate event in the 100-yard breaststroke posting a time of 1:11.31. Teammate
Jenna Molnar was just over three seconds slower but still finished the event in third place with a time of 1:14.76. Emily Vandersleen and
Emilee Murray dualled it out in the women's 50-yard butterfly with the duo finishing first and second. Vandersleen finished first with a finals time of 27:05 and Murray recorded a time of 29.20.
Emily Vandersleen won her second event of the day in the 50-yard freestyle besting an opponent from SUNY Brockport. She finished first with a recorded time of 25.29. Another first-place finisher for IC occurred in the 100-meter freestyle with
Jane Pfeufer winning the event by posting a time of 56.83, which bested her seed time.
Vandersleen continued her impressive afternoon taking home first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.03. Teammate and first year
Kiersten Gravuer finished second posting a finals time of 1:04.91.
In IM action,
Jenna Molnar won the 200-yard event clocking in at 2:20.64. Finishing just a few seconds slower was
Katie Champagne who posted a time of 2:22.85 and scored a second place finish.
Ithaca College won the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard free style relay as all in all it was a productive start to the season.
In diving action, the trio of
Ava Lowell (240.95),
Rachel Lange (236.65) and
Karalyn Pawcio (233.20) posted great scores to begin their seasons in the 1-meter diving board. The Bombers scored first, second and third-place on the 3-meter diving board.
Rachel Lange won the event with a score of 270.20, followed by
Ava Lowell who posted a score of 264.15 and
Karalyn Pawcio who had a score of 260.90 on the boards.
The Bombers will travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI in a dual on October 30 at 2 p.m.
