Women’s Soccer Stunned by Skidmore

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team outshot the visitors on Friday afternoon but were unable to make the most of their attacking chances within the 18-yard box as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Skidmore College. The Bombers dropped to 9-3 and 3-2 within the Liberty League while the Thoroughbreds improved to 7-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 within the conference.

Despite controlling the possession and attacking chances within the first half it was the Thoroughbreds that struck first making the most of a counterattack opportunity. Skidmore gained possession at midfield and a long ball was sent into the 6-yard box that was controlled by Paige Karl who a whipped a cross that IC goalkeeper Claire Reader got a paw on, but Lauren Greaves was there to tap the ball into the back of the net. The goal was scored at the 40:49 mark.

Skidmore carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break. The Bombers outshot the visitors by a 6-2 margin and IC also had three shots on target within the opening 45 minutes of play.

It wasn't until the 67th minute that Skidmore College doubled its lead. Isabella Nevin nicked the ball away from an IC defender and a few solid dribbles put her in a one-on-one opportunity against Claire Reader and she slotted the ball into the bottom right corner on the breakaway. It was Isabella Nevins first goal of the season.

Momentum finally began building for the Bombers and at the 80:09 mark they made the most of a corner kick opportunity. Alex Epifani whipped in a cross and the first ball was headed into the air by Rosie Bostian to a wide open Kate Kohler who headed the ball into the back of the net for her second career goal.

With just eight minutes remaining and IC putting quality passes together the team earned a penalty kick chance after a Thoroughbred foul within the box. Megan O'Reilly stepped up to take the kick, but reigning Liberty League defender of the week in goalkeeper Ava Keller made an outstretched save against the senior to keep the game at 2-1. On the rebound, Alex Epifani attempted a header, but that attempt was corralled by Keller for the save.

The women's soccer team will look to rebound on Saturday when they host Union College. The Bombers will celebrate Senior Day honoring the outstanding accomplishments of 10 student-athletes.
