Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Topples No. 16 Vassar, 1-0, on Late Ziehnert Goal

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team got back on the winning track Friday evening at No. 16 Vassar College, as the Bombers upset the Brewers, 1-0, on a late fourth quarter goal at Weinberg Field. After a loss to New Paltz earlier this week, which snapped a seven-game winning streak, the Bombers returned to the win column to elevate their record to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the Liberty League with three games remaining in the regular season.

It was a battle to sustain control in the opening 15 minutes between the top two teams in the Liberty League. Neither team took a shot nor earned a corner until the 9:01 mark of the period, which Vassar tallied both. Off the initial corner of the contest, Ella Pearl found space and ripped a shot on target but was sent away by Macy Brandwein, who made three saves in the first half. IC did not take a shot in the first 15 minutes of action.

As the game moved to through the second quarter, Vassar was awarded three consecutive corners late the period. Off the first insert, a Vassar shot was blocked and the follow up was saved by Brandwein. On the final chance, the Brewers were recorded a shot, which was turned away by Brandwein, and then the Bombers drew a foul to gain possession and earn a corner of their own right before the half. Brianna Lennon sent one towards the cage with 16 seconds left, but the shot was blocked to send the contest into halftime still scoreless.

Three minutes into the fourth quarter, IC picked up a corner. Jacqueline Mirabile inserted to Morgan Mullen at the top of the circle. Mullen then sent a pass back to a wide open Mirabile just a few yards from net for a shot attempt, which slipped through the feet of the Vassar goalkeeper and continued to roll towards the goal, but Brewers' Sarah Ryan sent the threat out of the circle for a defensive save.

With under four minutes remaining in regulation, the Bombers once again set up a scoring change with a corner. Mirabile started the play with a pass to Victoria Sestito, who sent a shot on target. The bouncing shot hopped up into Sarah Dumaresq's chest protector and fell to the ground. Grace Ziehnert cleaned up the loose ball and found the back of the net to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead with 3:36 on the clock, which resulted in the game-winning goal.

Brandwein finished the contest with five saves in the contest to earn her fourth shutout of the season.

IC outshot Vassar, 8-6, while the Brewers held a 5-4 edge in corners.

The Bombers return home for Senior Day against RPI this Sunday, October 17 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
