Softball Splits on Day Two of Spring Games

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Ithaca College softball teams split on day two of The Spring Games down in Florida.
 
The Bombers started the day with a 6-4 win over Susquehanna before falling to Catholic, 3-0.
 
Game 1: Ithaca 6, Susquehanna 4
 
Junior Gabby Laccona led off the inning with a single to third base before stealing second to put herself in scoring position. Senior Abby Shields then drew a walk before senior Haley Gaffney reached base on a fielder's choice.
 
First-year Tava Kasper singled to center, pushing Shields home to give IC a 1-0 lead over the Riverhawks.
 
Susquehanna answered right back in the bottom of the first inning with two runs.
 
Erin Bean was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Kiara Bryant laid down a bunt to reach first. Both runners advanced on a throwing error, putting two in scoring position.
 
Following two strike outs, Ashley Warner singled to right field, scoring both Bean and Bryant for a 2-1 advantage.
 
After two scoreless innings on both sides, Ithaca struck again in the top of the fourth inning, posting four more runs.
 
Gaffney led off with a single to shortstop before Kasper reached on an error to short. Haley White also reached base on an error to short to load the bases for the Bombers.
 
Senior Rebecca DiSerio drilled a double to centerfield to bring in Maniscalco, who was pinch running for Gaffney, and Kasper.
 
Sophomore Julia Loffredo drew a walk during her at-bat to load the bases. Another run scored when Laccona drew a walk to bring White home.
 
Sophomore Daniella Mulvey gave IC a 5-2 lead with a ground out to second, which scored DiSerio.
 
Ithaca added its final run in the top of the seventh inning as White homered, pushing the Bombers' edge to 6-2.
 
Susquehanna put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but only scored two runs.
 
Madison Lane singled to right field before advancing to second on an Emily Lear single to left. Bean followed that with a single to left, which brought Lane home.
 
Bryant then drew a walk to load the bases before Lear scored on a Kacey Bost sacrifice fly.
 
Kasper went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. DiSerio went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored while White finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
 
Junior Beth Fleming picked up her first win of the year in the circle, pitching four innings while allowing just two hits, two runs and striking out seven batters. Emily Holden came on to close out the game, going three innings with four hits and two runs.
 
Game 2: Catholic 3, Ithaca 0
 
Catholic scored a run in the first and two in the fourth inning to defeat IC 3-0.
 
The first inning started with a lead-off double down the left field line by Makayla Czan. She then advanced to third on a Katie Hurd bunt before scoring on a Kacie Badolato single to second base, putting the Cardinals up, 1-0.
 
Ithaca nearly tied things up in the bottom of the second inning, but the Bombers left the bases load.
 
Gaffney led off with a walk before White ripped a single to left field. Kira Flegenheimer was hit by a pitch to load the bases and put two runners in scoring position.
 
With just one out, Allison Dell'Orto put the ball in play and reached on a fielder's choice, as Catholic went for the force on Gaffney at home. The bases were still loaded, but a ground out to short from Mulvey ended the inning with the runners stranded.
 
Catholic put up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, starting with a Badolato single to second base. She then advanced to second on a Sammy Phillips ground out and scored on a Bella Ronca double down the right field line. Ronca scored the second run of the inning on a first base error.
 
The Bombers had just one runner reach base through the remainder of the game, in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Laccona doubled down the left field line, but was left stranded in scoring position.
 
Ithaca has a day off tomorrow and returns to action on Wednesday with an 11:15 a.m. game against Carthage and a 1:30 p.m. game against Lesley.
