Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Tops Lesley; Falls to Carthage in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Ithaca College softball team split on its third day of competition at The Spring Games. The Bombers fell, 4-0, to No. 14 Carthage to open the day before coming back to defeat Lesley, 10-0, in five innings.

The Bombers are now 2-4 on the year with four games left of their spring break trip.

Game 1: Carthage 4, Ithaca 0

Although both teams had hits through the first two innings, it was not until the top of the third that Carthage pushed runs home.

Ithaca had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning as first-year Tava Kasper drew a walk and then stole second. Senior Haley Gaffney also drew a walk to put two runners on, but both were left stranded.

In the top of the third with two outs, Ellie Bernero drew a walk before scoring on a Makenzie Miller double to left field. Courtney Polanski followed that up with a single up the middle, giving Danielle Koziczkowski, who was pinch running for Miller, to score.

The Bombers had another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third, following a Julia Loffredo walk. She moved up on a Gabby Laccona ground out, but back-to-back fly outs to the outfield ended the inning.

Carthage put another run up in the top of the fourth inning.

Madison Ganir was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Rylee Johnson laid down a bunt to advance Taylor Zielinski – who was running for Ganir – to second. Zielinski then scored on a Naomi Alonzo single to left center to give the Reds a 3-0 lead.

The final run for Carthage crossed the plate in the top of the fifth inning, starting with a single up the middle from Miller. Polanski then drew a walk to put Miller in scoring position. Ganir advanced the runners on a ground out to second and Marissa Maldanado – who came on to run for Miller – scored on a Johnson single through the left side.

Ithaca had the chance to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Laccona led off with a single to center field before stealing to second and advancing to third. However, she was left stranded following a strike out and a fly out.

Laccona finished 1-for-3 while Troetti went 1-for-1 on the day.

Fleming took the loss in the circle after going 3.2 innings with five hits, three runs and four walks to go with five strikeouts.

Game 2: Ithaca 10, Lesley 0 (5 innings)

The Bombers rallied after the loss to Carthage to put up a season-high 10 runs on Lesley in the second game of the double-header.

The Bombers wasted no time in getting on the board, going up 2-0 in the first inning.

Kasper got things going with a single to left field before senior Abby Shields sent a double to left center to score Kasper.

Gaffney then drove in Shields with a double to center field, giving IC the two-run advantage.

After three quick Lesley outs, Ithaca went back to work in the second inning, posting another run.

First-year Allison Dell'Orto led off with a triple to center and scored on a Daniella Mulvey single down the left field line.

The Bombers had a four-run inning in the top of the third.

Shields led off with a triple to center and scored on a Gaffney double to center to give IC a 4-0 lead.

Haley White was then hit by a pitch to put another runner on. Gaffney moved up to third on a Dell'Orto fly out, putting runners on the corners. Both Gaffney and White scored on a Mulvey double through the left side.

Loffredo drove in the final run of the inning and the seventh of the game with a single to left, scoring Mulvey.

Following three quick Lesley outs, including two strikeouts, in the bottom of the third, IC went on to score the rest of its runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Kasper drew a walk to lead off, stole second, and then scored on a Shields' single to left.

White then drove in another run for IC, as her double to left brought in Madison Casale, who was pinch running for Shields.

Dell'Orto continued her solid day at the plate with a RBI double to center, scoring White and giving the Bombers a 10-0 lead.

Riley Piromalli picked up the win the circle for Ithaca - the first of her career - after going the full five innings with four strike outs, two walks and no runs.

The Bombers are back in action tomorrow with a 4:15 p.m. game against Lake Forest and a 6:15 p.m. game against the University of Mount Union.
