SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball team improved to 15-5 on the season and 10-3 in the Liberty League with a 93-82 road win at Union College on Saturday afternoon. Ithaca eclipsed 90-plus points for the seventh time this season and completed the yearly sweep of Union.
The Bombers shot 29-for-61 (47.5-percent) from the field, 10-for 21 (47.6%) from 3-point range and a season-best 25-for-30 (83.3%) at the free throw line, including 21-for-24 in the second half.
Seniors
Sebastian Alderete and
Riley Thompson each scored 22 points in the win, while sophomore
Skylar Sinon notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Alderete went 9-for-16 from the field, to go along with eight rebounds, while Thompson – who missed the past four games – played 22 minutes and went 11-for-11 at the line. Sinon was 6-for-13 overall and 7-of-8 at the stripe.
Junior
Bryan Karl got off to a hot start in the contest with three 3-pointers to finish the afternoon with nine points, while senior
Jake Mitchell added eight points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Zach Warech went 3-for-3 in the contest for six points, while classmate
George Sikoryak III was 4-for-4 at the line in 15 minutes off the bench.
Union raced out to a 6-0 lead in the opening minute, but the Bombers responded with a 16-0 run over the next 3:19 to build a 16-6 advantage. Karl scored all his nine points during that run.
Ithaca added three points to its edge with 9:00 to go, 32-18, as Thompson connected from 3-point range and drew a foul to complete the four-point play and then Warech scored 1:10 later to give IC its largest lead of the half at 34-18.
From there, Union closed out the half with a 23-15 run to trim Ithaca's lead to 49-41 heading into intermission.
The Dutchmen would continue that momentum into the second half and regained the lead at 52-51 in just three minutes of action. After several lead changes over the next four minutes, Union pushed its edge out to seven points at 68-61 with 9:07 to go.
Ithaca responded with eight straight points behind four from Alderete and two each from Sinon and Warech to go back on top, 69-68, with 7:05 to play. Within the next minute-plus, the lead changed hands four more times until Sinon made three free throws to flip a 72-71 deficit to a 74-72 lead, which the Bombers maintained for the rest of the contest.
Thompson would scored Ithaca's next five points to push the difference out to 79-72 with 5:05 on the clock, but Union batted back to a two-point spread, 79-77, with 3:03 to go.
The Bombers put the game away by going 12-for-12 at the free throw line over the final 1:54, including 8-for-8 from Thompson.
Ithaca heads to RPI tomorrow for a 2 p.m. tip-off, which is a rescheduled game from Friday evening. IC and RPI were supposed to play Friday night at 7:30 p.m., but the winter storm that rolled through the area pushed the contest back two days.
