ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Ithaca College baseball team suffered a 9-4 loss in a neutral site contest against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at St. Mary's College (Md.). With the setback, Ithaca is 1-3 early in the 2020 season.
Ithaca scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on an error, as junior Garrett Callgahan scored from second base. Freshman
Alex Babcock put the ball in play with one out. Callaghan reached base on a single and stole second to move into scoring position.
Hampden-Sydney tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a single to left field. The Tigers placed their first two batters on to lead off the frame with a pair of singles.
The lead grew to 3-1 for Hampden-Sydney in the bottom of the second as one run crossed on a single to center after an error led off the inning, and the second came home on another base hit. Both runs were unearned.
In the bottom of the third and fourth innings, the Tigers managed to push one run home in both frames to extend their advantage to 5-1. Back-to-back hits started things off in the third, and after batter's interference was called, another base hit brought in a run. In the fourth, Ithaca recorded the first two outs, but Hampden-Sydney strung together a rally with consecutive singles to bring in the fifth run of the contest.
Ithaca's deficit grew to 6-1 in the sixth inning on an RBI single, but the Bombers got that run back in the top half of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from freshman

Matt Smith, who stroked a one-triple earlier in the inning.
After a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Bombers plated two more runs in the top of the eighth to cut the difference to 7-4. Callaghan led off with a double and moved to third on an error. An RBI fielder's choice by freshman
Tyler Edelman broke home Callaghan, and then freshman Andrew Shoemaker drove home Edelman with a base hit to left field.
Hampden-Sydney put the game away in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs to account for the final tally of 9-4.
Callaghan and Smith each went 2-for-4 in the loss. Senior
Tom Cosentino took the loss in six innings pitched, as he allowed seven runs (five earned) on 17 hits. Freshman
Matt Chase tossed a scoreless inning of relief and junior Ben Cordova finished up the contest with an inning in the eighth.
The Bombers are back in action tomorrow against St. Mary's at 12 p.m.
