VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Ithaca College baseball program took a pair of losses to begin the 2020 season at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, as the Bombers dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 11-1 and 4-3. The Bombers begin the season 0-2, while Virginia Wesleyan improves to 2-4 overall. The two teams will square off again tomorrow for the final game of a three-game series at 11 a.m. at TowneBank Park.
GAME ONE: Virginia Wesleyan 11, Ithaca 1
The Bombers got on the board first in their opener as sophomore
Matt Wimmer drove home junior
Brendan Ryan with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning. Ryan led off the inning with a double and moved up to third on a wild pitch.
IC's lead was short-lived, however, as Virginia Wesleyan plated a run in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. In the third, a pair of errors with two outs led to consecutive run-scoring singles and then a third error in the frame brought home another run.
The Marlins tacked on another run in the sixth and then exploded for six runs on five hits in the seventh to finish off the 11-1 victory.
Ithaca struggled offensively in the opener, as the Bombers produced just three hits and struck out 16 times.
After Ryan's double, senior
Chris Dietz and junior
Jack Lynch tallied base hits.
Senior
Buzz Shirley took the loss on the mound.
GAME TWO: Virginia Wesleyan 4, Ithaca 3
In the night cap, IC fell behind, 3-0, after the fifth inning as the Marlins plated two runs in the second and another in the fifth. A two-run base hit highlighted the second inning and then a sac fly in the fifth brought home the third run of the game.
The Bombers battled back with a pair of runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3.
In the seventh, Dietz started the rally with a one-out walk. Freshman
Mike Nauta followed with a base hit and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Both runners would eventually come around to score on two more passed balls to cut Ithaca's deficit to 3-2.
Ithaca knotted the game at 3-3 in the eighth on another passed ball, which allowed junior
Garrett Callaghan to score. In the frame, Callaghan led off with a walk and moved up to third on a base hit by Lynch. After the second out was recorded, Ryan drew a walk to load the bases and then Callaghan scooted home on another passed ball.
The Marlins completed the sweep with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth after a walk and sacrifice bunt.
Shirley went 3-for-5 with a double in Game 2, while Lynch was 2-for-4. Callaghan doubled in a 1-for-4 performance.
