Hannan Shatters 5,000-Meter Division III Record at Valentine Invitational in Boston

RESULTS

BOSTON, Mass. –
Senior Parley Hannan of the nationally ranked No. 6 Ithaca College women's track & field team made NCAA Division III history on Friday evening at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University as she set a new DIII record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:05.36.

Hannan, who ran in the first section of the race and against some of the top 5K runners in the country (professional and collegiate), shattered the previous DIII record by more than 16 seconds of 16:21.49 set back in 2012 by Christy Cazzola of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Hannan also surpassed IC's school record time of 16:28.15 set by Taryn Cordani at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in 2017, which won the national title for Cordani.

Hannan finished fifth overall in the event and beat the next closest DIII runner by 42 seconds.

According to a tweet from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Friday evening, Hannan ranks 14th nationally among all collegiate runners (DI, DII, DIII, NAIA and NJCAA).

The section in which Hannan raced in featured three-time Olympian Jenny Simpson, who won the race with a 2020 Olympic-qualifying time of 14:58.67. In 2016, Simpson won a bronze medal in the Rio Olympic Games.

Also competing in the race was Dani Jones from Colorado University, who set the NCAA Division I record on Friday with a time of 15:17.11. Jones, a senior, is a four-time national champion and nine-time All-American at Colorado.

Sophomore Katelyn Hutchison was also in action on Friday as she competed in the 400-meter dash and also set a new school record with a time of 56.30 seconds, which surpassed the previous mark of 56.78 seconds set by Alexandria Rheaume in 2018. Hutchison placed 22nd overall and was first among DIII runners. Her time also moves her up to No. 1 on the DIII list after a converted time of 57.05 seconds.
