BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior
Riley Thompson scored a career-high 36 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, to lead the Ithaca College men's basketball team to a convincing 101-87 victory over Montclair State University on the final day of the Steel Club Classic hosted by Moravian College on Sunday evening. Ithaca eclipsed 100 points for the second time this season and dropped a season-best 57 points in the first half.
Thompson played 28 minutes in the contest and scored 24 points in the first half as he went 9-for-12 shooting. Thompson's previous career-best of 29 points scored occurred on November 17, 2017 against SUNY Canton during his sophomore season.
Senior
Sebastian Alderete added 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, while sophomore
Skylar Sinon chipped in 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting with five assists and four boards. Freshman
Jack Stern also reached double-digits with 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 evening.
Senior
Jake Mitchell came up one point shy of double figures and pulled down five rebounds.
Ithaca shot 42-for-80 overall (52.5%) and assisted on 22 made baskets. The Bombers were 22-for-40 in the first half and 20-for-40 in the second stanza. IC also scored 52 points in the paint and 22 more off turnovers.
Despite the 14-point victory, the Bombers led by as many as 30 points with 13:28 left in the game (79-49). IC reached the 100-point plateau on a 3-pointer from sophomore
Tommy Carver with 3:11 remaining, which made the score, 101-76.
Montclair State led for most of the opening 10 minutes of the game, but a layup from Thompson with 9:11 left in the half gave the Bombers the lead for good at 27-26. From there, IC outscored Montclair, 30-17 to head into intermission with a 57-43 advantage.
In the second half, the Bombers continued to score at a rapid clip, as they netted 22 points in just 6:32 of action to capture their 30-point cushion. IC held onto its 20-plus point lead until there was 1:32 remaining in the contest.
IC also reached 100 points this season against Vassar College on December 7 in a 103-80 win.
The Bombers will make their home debut next Friday, January 10 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Skidmore College for a Liberty League matchup inside Ben Light Gymnasium.
