GENESEO, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey was back on the road on Saturday evening when it continued its SUNYAC stretch of the schedule with a clash against SUNY Geneseo. Unfortunately, IC was unable to snap out of its recent funk, as the Bombers dropped their third straight contest in a 1-0 loss to the Knights. The defeat lowers Ithaca's record to 5-3 on the year.
Â
The difference in tonight's contest came during the second quarter, as the Knights were able to strike for the lone goal of the game. SUNY Geneseo was able to net the score on the team's seventh penalty corner of the evening. Haley Clark fed Julia Kim a nice pass on the right wing, which the latter whipped past IC's senior keeper
Savanna Lenker to break the scoreless deadlock with 6:02 remaining before halftime.
Â
The goal spoiled an otherwise impressive evening for Lenker and the IC defense. Lenker marked a season-high 13 saves in the loss, while sophomores
Allison Egan and
Anna Parrish both tallied defensive saves in the contest. It was a heroic effort for the squad, as the Knights held hefty advantages in possession, zone time and scoring chances on the evening.
Â
SUNY Geneseo outshot Ithaca 21-to-4 on the night, while the Knights held an 8-to-5 edge in penalty corner opportunities. Despite the lopsided nature of the stats, IC certainly did not back down. The Bombers turned in a big effort in the fourth quarter, generating four penalty corner chances, but were unable to find the final linkages in an effort to find an equalizer.
Â
Sophomore
Morgan Mullen posted IC's first significant threat during the final frame, whipping a shot on target that was stopped by Geneseo keeper Natalie Chojnacki 2:58 into the quarter. IC earned a penalty corner chance on the play, which resulted in another near-miss for the Bombers, as sophomore back
Victoria Sestito nearly scored. While her shot had Chojnacki beaten, Geneseo defender Kelly McKeveny was there to sweep the would-be tying goal off the end line.
Â
The Bombers would keep the pressure on with three additional penalty corners down the stretch. Unfortunately, IC was unable to generate a shot on target. Sestito had a shot blocked, while sophomore midfielder
Jacqueline Mirabile tipped a shot wide with 3:40 remaining in the game.
Â
Ithaca will be back on home turf on Wednesday, September 25, as the Bombers conclude the non-league slate ahead of Liberty League action against St. John Fisher. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
