ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College field hockey team was back in action on Wednesday evening when it welcomed St. John Fisher to Higgins Stadium for the team's non-league finale. Unfortunately, IC was unable to shake free of its offensive slump, falling in a hard-fought 1-0 defeat against the Cardinals. The loss drops Ithaca's record to 5-4 on the year.
Offense was hard to come by for an Ithaca side that has struggled to find the cracks in opposing defenses over the team's recent four-game skid. For the second straight game, IC was on the wrong side of a one-goal contest against another regional foe. Although the Bombers battled hard throughout the contest, the Cardinals did not give an inch despite some significant second-half pressure making the one goal lead stand up.
The lone goal came just over 10-minutes into the game. Fisher striker Lindsay Scott earned the breakthrough, whipping a low shot past IC keeper
Savanna Lenker who was once-again stellar in defeat. Lenker finished the evening with nine saves in the contest.
Ithaca's brightest moments came during the third quarter. The Bombers put together a strong period with some significant attacking pressure. IC earned four penalty corners and generated six shots, four of which on target, but could not get one past Kelly Bergamo.
Ithaca had its closest call to snap the scoreless string just over two minutes into the third. Working on a penalty corner, first-year
Brianna Lennon fired a shot that was blocked. Sophomore
Jacqueline Mirabile gathered the rebound and fired a shot towards the cage, which caromed off the post before being swept away. Just over a minute later, Bergamo swept away a shot from sophomore
Victoria Sestito. Ithaca again ramped up the pressure during the back half of the quarter. Sestito and Rafferty were denied on a consecutive penalty corner chances with just over five minutes left in the quarter. Sophomore
Grace Ziehnert added a look at goal with under two minutes remaining in the quarter, but again Bergamo was up to the task.
Unfortunately, IC was unable to generate much in the way of attacking looks during the fourth quarter. Fisher kept the Bombers hemmed in for the majority of the final 15-minutes of play. Lenker stood tall to keep Ithaca within striking distance. She made three stops in the final quarter, but IC was unable to get back on the front foot.
The Bombers return to action this Saturday, September 28, when they head to Schenectady, N.Y., to face Union in the Liberty League opener. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
