Today's result had been building up over recent weeks. After a couple challenging weeks to begin the season, the Bombers had been playing some of their best tennis of the spring entering the weekend. Today's win was a just reward for the work the team had put in.
There was no carry-over effect from yesterday's challenging match at TCNJ. Ithaca came out firing right from the doubles session, rolling to three straight wins to take a 3-0 lead to the singles session for the first time this season. It was Ithaca's third-doubles tandem of junior
Brianna Ruback and first-year
Chloe Levy that got things started. The newly formed duo, playing together for the first time in live competition, did not concede a game in an 8-0 whitewashing of Bard's Tori Bowen and Duhita Das. IC's first-doubles grouping featured the usual senior tandem of
Caroline Dunn and
Kathryn Shaffer. The duo doubled IC's lead to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Katie Esposito and Jamie-Rose Graham. Ithaca's second-doubles grouping of sophomore
Sara Steinberg and rookie
Shannon Wolfe rounded out the dominant session with an 8-2 win over Harper Zacharias and Eva Grunblatt. For Wolfe, it was her first career win in all formats.
It did not take long for Ithaca to clinch things once singles play got underway. Dunn did not concede a game in consecutive 6-0, 6-0 sets in the second-singles match against Jamie-Rose Graham to push Ithaca's advantage to 4-0. Steinberg followed with the clinching win, a 6-1, 6-0 straight-sets triumph over Harper Zacharias. Ruback also scored a convincing win in the top half of the lineup, besting Katie Esposito 6-2, 6-1 at first-singles.
The bottom part of Ithaca's lineup was a banner day for the IC rookies. First-years
Rel Klein,
Chloe Levy and
Shannon Wolfe each recorded their first career singles victories at the collegiate level to cap off the day. Klein bested Eva Grunblatt 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth slot. Levy earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tori Bowen at fifth-singles, while Wolfe posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ayanna Battle at sixth-singles.
Ithaca returns to action on Wednesday, April 10, when it travels to Rochester, N.Y., to face RIT at 4:00 p.m.
