Softball Splits With Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The No. 14 Ithaca College softball team split its double header against Cornell University on April 23. Ithaca won the first game 3-2, while Cornell bounced back and won the second game 6-3. The loss snaps a 12-game winning streak for IC.

The Bombers are now 22-6-1 overall while Cornell is 8-31.

Game 1 | Ithaca 3, Cornell 2

The Bombers got on the board in the first inning when senior Nikkey Skuraton got hit by a pitch. In the next at bat, senior Alex Wright reached base on an error which caused Skuraton to advance to third. Junior Abby Shields hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Skuraton and make the game 1-0.

Neither team scored until the top of the fourth when Cornell put two runs on the scoreboard. The Big Red hit back-to-back solo home runs, which were hit by freshmen Allison Kerce and Emily McKinney. With both home runs, the score was 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Senior Hannah Anderson doubled to left field to start the bottom of the fourth for the Bombers. After sophomore Gabby Laccona grounded out and freshman Daniella Mulvey got hit by a pitch, sophomore Haley White walked to load the bases. Senior Annie Cooney capitalized on the situation and singled to left field to bring in a run and tied the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Shields reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a Cornell throwing error. Laccona singled to center field to score Shields and take the lead 3-2 in what would be the final run of the game.

Laccona highlighted Ithaca's offense by going 2-for-2 with one RBI. Shields and Cooney each had an RBI as well.

Picking up her seventh win of the season was junior Emily Holden. She pitched 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and no hits. Holden improves her ERA to 0.93 on the season.
