Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Concludes Regular Season with 89-62 Win at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -  The Ithaca College men's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a convincing, 89-62, road victory at Vassar College on Saturday afternoon to improve its record to 15-10 overall and 11-7 in the Liberty League. With the win, Ithaca earns the right to host a Liberty League quarterfinal contest next Tuesday, February 19 at 7 p.m. against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Bombers will be the fourth seed heading into next week's championship tournament, which will be hosted by Skidmore College. St. Lawrence University earned the No. 2 seed, while Hobart College is the third seed and will play No. 6 Bard College on Tuesday.

In Saturday's matchup, Ithaca once again proved why it is the top scoring team in the Liberty League as the Bombers shot 47.1% (33-for-70) from the floor, 45.8% (11-for-24) from 3-point range and 12-for-19 at the free throw line to account for 89 points.

IC notched 50 points in the first half and took a 10-point lead into intermission. In the second half, the Bombers tallied 39 points and held the Brewers to just 22 on their end of the floor, which resulted in the 27-point victory.

Senior Peter Ezema led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, and narrowly missed out on his 35th career double-double with nine rebounds. Freshman Skylar Sinon dropped 17 points with five boards, while junior Sebastian Alderete added 11 points and six rebounds.

Freshman Zach Warech provided a spark off the bench with a career-high 10 points, four assists and three rebounds. Sophomore Bryan Karl also added 10 points in a reserve role, while junior Riley Thompson contributed seven points in 20 minutes of action.

Vassar jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the contest over the opening 4:29 and added a point to its lead by the 14:27 mark to make the difference 19-11. The Bombers answered with an 8-2 run to pull to within two points at 21-19 with 12:28 to play, as Sinon and Karl each scored three points and Ezema added a bucket.

Less than three minutes later, IC regained the lead, 26-24, on a Warech 3-pointer. The Brewers tied things up shortly after that and went back on top, 29-28, with 7:28 on the clock, but a three-point play from Sinon just nine seconds later put the Bombers back in front for the rest of the half (and game).

Over the final 6:47 of the first half, Ithaca outscored Vassar, 19-11, to take a 50-40 advantage into the break. With 44 seconds to go, Karl gave the Bombers a 12-point edge, 50-38, on a three-ball before the Brewers finished off the half.

The Bombers continued their offensive prowess early on in the second stanza, as they quickly established a 20-point disparity, 63-43, within five minutes of time.

Vassara managed to bring things back to a 19-point difference, 69-50, with 11:45 to go, but a 3-pointer from Alderete pushed Ithaca's advantage to 22 points and the Bombers cruised from there.

IC's largest lead of the game came with 2:16 remaining as a pair of free throws by senior Jake Mitchell staked IC to an 87-59 lead.

Tuesday's home quarterfinal matchup will be the second time in as many years that the Bombers hosted an opening round Liberty League tournament game. Ithaca and RPI split the season series this year, as the Engineers prevailed at home, 82-79, but the Bombers answered with an 89-85 overtime win inside Ben Light Gymnasium.
