POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Three different Ithaca College men's basketball players eclipsed 20 points on Saturday evening during Ithaca's 103-80 Liberty League victory at Vassar College to improve the Bombers to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play. The 103 points are the most in a game since IC defeated SUNY Canton, 100-72, on Nov. 17, 2017.
Seniors
Riley Thompson and
Sebastian Alderete, as well as sophomore
Skylar Sinon each scored more than 20 points in the victory. Thompson led the way with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while Alderete finished with 23 points on 8-of-15 from the floor, to go along with seven rebounds. Sinon poured in a career-best 22 points on a 9-of-12 afternoon, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, with seven boards and six assists.
Freshman
Jack Stern also reached double digits with 15 points in the game as he went 6-for-11 from the field with five rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior
Jake Mitchell also contributed eight points and four assists in the win.
The Bombers shot 52.8-percent overall (38-for-72) and were 11-for-27 from distance (40.7%). IC assisted on 20 made baskets. IC led by as many as 29 points in the game late in the second half and only trailed, 1-0, after the opening 25 seconds.
After the made free throw by Vassar, Sinon put in a layup less than 30 seconds later to give IC the lead for good.
Vassar would tie the game up, however, at 19-19 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half, but Alderete scored shortly after to put the Bombers back on top. Sinon would then connect from 3-point range to give IC a 24-19 edge with 10:23 to go.
With 6:45 to play in the half, Stern went 1-for-2 at the line to give Ithaca its first double-digit lead of game at 33-23, which the Bombers would maintain until there was 37 seconds left. Sinon then ended the half with a three-point play to send the Bombers into intermission with a 52-40 advantage.
As the second half got underway, Thompson connected on a three-ball with 16:50 left in the game to put IC ahead, 64-43, for its initial 20-point cushion. The Brewers answered with an 11-0 run to pull back to within 10 points by the 14:58 mark, but that's the closest they would get for the rest of the contest.
After another 10-point spread at 72-62 with 12:04 to play, the Bombers outscored Vassar, 27-8 over the next nine minutes to put the game away, as IC build a 99-70 disparity.
Sophomore
Alex Barron made both ends of his free throws with 1:05 remaining in the game to put Ithaca past the 100-point threshold, and freshman Gabe Khalife capped off the contest with a layup in the waning seconds.
Ithaca heads to the University of Rochester on Tuesday, Dec. 10 for an 8 p.m. for the final game of the 2019 portion of the Bombers' schedule.
