Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 25 Men's Soccer Falls to Clarkson, 1-0, in Liberty League Quarterfinal

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 25, fifth-seeded Ithaca College men's soccer team fell to fourth-seeded Clarkson, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday evening.

The lone goal of the game came in the second half off of a Clarkson corner kick. Following a scuffle in front of the net, Kyle Jackson had the lucky foot and slipped the ball in to give the Golden Knights the 1-0 edge.

"Obviously, we are disappointed tonight," said Head Coach Kyle Dezotell. "We had aspirations to win the Liberty League tournament as we believe we are the best team in the league. It was not for a lack of effort and our guys can hold their heads high. We made one mistake which cost us but otherwise we were excellent. Credit to Clarkson who held strong defensively and are deserving semi-finalists as they've had a great season."

The Bombers were not without chances throughout the game. Despite only registering one official shot in the first half, Ithaca had several offensive runs that were ultimately headed off by Clarkson's defenders before the Bombers could get off a shot.

Clarkson recorded the first shot of the game, a ball from Henry Gomez in the 27th minute, but senior goalkeeper Max Lichtenstein made his first save of the game.

The Golden Knights then had another opportunity in the 34th minute, but Lichtenstein once again saved Gomez's shot.

IC's lone shot of the first half came from sophomore Colin Shust in the 37th minute. The attempt, however, was saved by goalkeeper Ian Roeloff's to keep the Bombers off the board.

The Bombers also put together several offensive pushes in the second half which resulted in a total of 10 shots.

Ithaca notched a corner kick in the 48th minute which ultimately resulted in a shot from senior Kevin Turi, which was high.

First-year Aidan Keenan continued his solid offensive play with a shot in the 52nd minute, but the ball was wide of the goal.

Following Clarkson's goal in the 54th minute, the Bombers continued to push for the equalizer.

Sophomore Ali Kapasi registered a shot in the 58th minute, which was wide. Jack Monnes followed that up with a shot in the 60th minute, which was high.

The Bombers got off back-to-back shots-on-goal in the 73rd and 74th minutes. Keenan played a ball to the bottom center of the net, but Roeloffs was there to make the save. Then Shust put a shot on-frame a minute later, which Roeloffs stretched up to stop.

In the 82nd minute, Kapasi had a chance for Ithaca, but Roeloffs stood strong in the net and stopped that attempt as well.

The Bombers are now 12-5-2 on the season and will await their fate on Monday to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

"We have had a remarkable season with four wins over Top 25 programs and believe that we stand an excellent chance at a Pool C bid on Monday," said Dezotell. "We have been in the top four in our region and top 25 in the country all season. We will be ready when the call comes."
