Women's Soccer Hands St. Lawrence First Loss

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's handed St. Lawrence its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory.

The Bombers are now 8-0-2 on the season with a 2-0 mark in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence sits at 6-1-1 overall with a 1-1 conference record.

Although Ithaca had scoring opportunities in the first half, it was not until the second half that the Bombers would ultimately put both goals on the board.

Ithaca wasted no time in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring just 2:04 in.

Sophomore Alex Epifani scored her fourth goal of the season at the 47:04 mark to put IC ahead a goal. Senior Sarah Pirnie sent a cross into the box, where Epifani was there to make the athletic finish.

Ithaca put up another goal in the 65th minute to take a 2-0 advantage. First-year Molly MacFarland scored her first career goal on a pass from Epifani.

Epifani took a through pass and dribbled into the box before firing off a hard cross. MacFarland controlled and finished the ball for the goal. Epifani now has six assists for her sophomore campaign.

With 8:40 left in the first half, Ally Christman sent in a cross where Epifani was there to finish it, but the goal was ultimately called back.

The Bombers had several promising chances throughout the game. Just 5:49 in, Epifani took a cross from Christman and sent a hard shot to go, but the ball hit the bottom of the cross bar and bounced away, keeping IC off the board.

Ithaca continued the offensive push throughout the first half, forcing St. Lawrence goalkeeper Samantha Allen to make several plays on the ball.

Christman registered back-to-back shots for the Bombers in the 16th and 19th minutes, but Allen made the save in both scenarios.

Defensively, the Bombers were as solid as ever. In the 13th minute, there was a scramble in front of the goal which tied up goalkeeper Sara Jakobsze, but Kate Kohler was there to make the save on the line for IC, keeping the Saints off the board.

Ithaca continued to generate offense in the second half, registering nine total shots, including both goals.

Following the first goal, junior Gabriella Mihale and Epifani both had attempts to add to IC's edge. Mihale's shot as well as Epifani's first of two shots sailed wide of the goal. Epifani also had a shot on frame in the 59th minute, but Allen came up with the save again.

Less than one minute before MacFarland scored the second goal of the game, she also put a shot on goal, forcing Allen to make the play.

The Bombers put two more shots on goal following MacFarland's score.

Mihael's shot in the 69th minute and Christman's in the 77th were both saved by Allen, who finished with six saves on the day.

The Saints had two solid chances in the second half, starting with a Katie Clemmer shot in the 53rd minute which just missed going on as it hit off the crossbar.  St. Lawrence then put the ball on frame in the 79th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Emma Fruhling was there to make the save and preserve the win for the Bombers.

Statistically, Ithaca outshot St. Lawrence, 16-6 and also recorded five corners to the Saints zero.

The Bombers are back in action on Wednesday, October 3 when they host No. 8 William Smith College at 4 p.m.
