HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team defeated Houghton College, 13-10, in a high-scoring Empire 8 Conference showdown at Kerr-Pegula Stadium on Wednesday evening. Ithaca pounded out 15 hits and recorded at least one run in six different innings to lift the Bombers' record to 12-10 on the season and 5-4 in the Empire 8. Houghton is now 9-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Ithaca posted a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Jack Lynch, which drove in senior
Domenic Boresta. A few pitches later, junior
Garrett Snyder crossed home on a wild pitch. Boresta led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a base hit by Snyder.
In the bottom half of the second, Houghton took the lead, 3-2, on an inside-the-park home run by John Zamites with two runners on.
IC tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the third inning on a groundout by junior
Adam Gallagher, which allowed fellow junior
Sam Little to come home. S. Little led off the frame with a triple down the right field line.
The Highlanders regained the advantage in the bottom half on the third on a fielder's choice, to drive in a run from third. Houghton put a runner just 90 feet away with a single, wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt.
The Bombers broke the game open over the next three innings with nine runs by the top of the sixth to build a 12-4 advantage. In the fourth inning, junior
Jake Generali tied the contest up at 4-4 with a double to plate Snyder, who led off the inning with a single.
IC notched five runs in the fifth inning, as a Fuoti single plated Boresta for the initial run. After back-to-back walk so to Lynch and Generali, junior
Andrew Bailey cleared the bases with a double to the left-center gap.
The Ithaca lead extended to 12-4 in the sixth inning on a passed ball, which allowed freshman
Alex Robinson to scamper home, and a sacrifice fly by Generali to bring in Boresta.
Houghton answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth with four hits to close to within a 12-7 difference, but IC responded with a run in the seventh to give the Bombers a six-run lead.
An RBI groundout by Boresta brought home Gallagher, who reached on a single and moved his way around with a stolen base and base hit by Robinson.
Houghton scored the final three runs of the evening to close to within a 13-10 score, but junior
Matt Eiel shut down the ninth with three strikeouts.
Bailey drove in four runs on a 2-for-5 evening, while Snyder was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Generali went 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Fuoti, Gallagher, Robinson and Boresta each had two hits.
Junior Emmette Dunn picked up the win in 5.2 innings pitched. Dunn gave up eight hits and seven runs (six earned) with seven strikeouts before exiting the contest for junior Chrisitan LaLomia, who fired 1.2 innings of relief.
Eiel concluded the contest with a near perfect outing, as he allowed just two hits in 23 pitches over 1.2 innings.
The Bombers head to Utica College this weekend for a three-game series beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
