No. 24 Softball Swept By No. 9 St. John Fisher on the Road

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team fell to St. John Fisher in both games of Saturday's doubleheader.

In the first game of the day, the Bombers were unable to complete a late-game rally and ultimately fell, 4-2. Despite Ithaca's solid offensive play in the second game, Fisher ended things in walk-off fashion to secure a 6-5 win and complete the sweep.

Game 1: SJFC 4, IC 2

St. John Fisher put itself on the board early, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Julie Sortisio drew a walk for the Cardinals followed by a Sammie Torlish single to left field. Sortisio scored on an error on an Ashley Prince shot out to center, to put Fisher up 1-0.

The Bombers tied things up, 1-1, in the top of the third inning when junior Annie Cooney led off with a home run, her first of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Fisher broke things open just enough to hold onto a lead for the rest of the game.

Jill Murray reached first on an error and advanced to second on a Marissa Kirker hit to left. Emily Trotman doubled to left center to bring in both Alexa Montemayor, who was pinch running for Murray, and Murray which put the Cardinals up 3-1.

Fisher added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting with a Sarah Kubik single to left. She advanced on a Prince walk before heading to third on a Mary Clair Grosvenor hit, putting runners on the corners. Kubik was eventually driven in by Murray to score the fourth run of the game for the Cardinals.

Ithaca put together a small rally in the top of the seventh, scoring one more run. Gabby sent a two-out double to center field to put herself in scoring position and was driven in on a Vanessa Brown double to left to cut Fisher's lead to 4-2.

The Cardinals forced a ground out for the final play of the game to take the first half of the two-game slate.

Junior Haley Congdon took the loss on the mound while Fisher's Lindsey Thayer earned her sixth win of the year after striking out 13 batters.

Game 2: SJFC 6, IC 5

It was the Bombers who got on the board first in the second game of the day, during their first at-bat.

Brown led off with a single to short before advancing to second when Laccona was hit by a pitch. Allie Colleran followed that up by loading the bases with a single down the right field line
Both Brown and Laccona scored following a fielders' choice play on an Abby Shields hit and a third base error, to put IC up 2-0.

St. John Fisher wasted no time in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game 2-2. Trotman led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Sortisio sacrifice bunt. Kubik tied the game for the Cardinals on a two-out homerun.

The Bombers added another run in the top of the second inning to take another lead over the Cardinals.

Alex Kimmel led the inning off, reaching first on a second base error and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Nikkey Skuraton laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Kimmel forward to third base before Brown sent a single up the middle to score the run and give IC a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Ithaca once again produced offensively when Alex Wright hit a two-run homerun to give the Bombers a 4-2 advantage over the Cardinals.

St. John Fisher had an offensively productive inning in the bottom half of the inning which gave them a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth.

Trotman started things off for the Cardinals with a single to center before Sortisio drew a walk. Torlish doubled to right center during the next play, scoring Trotman and cutting IC's lead to 4-3.

Both Sortisio and Torlish scored on a Grosvenor single to right center, giving St. John Fisher its first lead of game two.

The Bombers tied things up, 5-5, in the top of the seventh inning when Brown took a Thayer pitch and sent it over the fence.

Fisher secured the win in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single.

Prince led off with a double to right field before advancing to third on a Grosvenor ground out. Maddie Klidonas ended things for the Cardinals with a single to right, bringing in Prince to give Fisher the 6-5 win.

Brown finished 3-for-3 in game two with two runs scored and two RBI. Beth Fleming struck out nine Fisher batters in 6.1 innings of work.

The Bombers are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Alfred University for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. It is the first of a three-game homestand for Ithaca.
