PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team pounded out 13 hits as four different Bombers recorded multi-hit games to lead IC to an 11-8 Empire 8 Conference road victory at St. John Fisher College on Friday afternoon. With the win, Ithaca is now 9-7 on the season and 2-2 in the Empire 8, and also snaps Fisher's six-game winning streak. Fisher is now 10-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
The Bombers threatened early in the top of the first inning by placing their first two runners on base by way of an error and walk to senior
Domenic Boresta and junior
Webb Little, but the next three batters were retired.
In the top of the second, junior
John Peterson led off with a single. After a fielder's choice, junior
Cam Fuoti drew a walk to once again put two runners on for IC. A strikeout and fly out would extinguish the scoring opportunity.
IC finally broke through in the top of the third inning as junior
Adam Gallagher drove in two runs with a single to centerfield to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead. W. Little led off the frame with a base hit to left-center and then junior
Andrew Bailey followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by junior
Sam Little moved both runners into scoring position, Gallagher laced his base hit off the glove of Fisher's pitcher into the outfield.
The Ithaca lead extended to 3-0 in the fourth inning. Fouti led things off with a single to center and was sacrificed up to second by sophomore
Marco Fontana. Boresta then singled up the middle to plate Fuoti with one out. A hit-and-run ensued as W. Little ripped a base hit up the middle, but a 5-4-3 double play by Fisher ended any possibility of IC tacking on more runs.
Fisher got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, 3-1, on a solo home run to left by Scott Eisenmenger.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Bombers put two more runs on the board to take a 5-1 advantage. Fuoti started the rally with a one-out base hit and then moved up 90 feet on a sac bunt. Fisher went to the bullpen and proceeded to walk the bases loaded. After that, a single through the left side by Bailey brought in Fuoti and Boresta. IC had a chance to continue the scoring as another walk loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Fisher closed to within 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth. A one-out error started things off and then a double put both runners in scoring position. Another error brought in the first run, and a potential inning-ending double play allowed the second run to score as the throw to first base sailed high.
Fisher threatened once again in the bottom of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles to place runners on the corners, but a line drive to second base turned into a double play to get IC out of the jam and preserved the 5-3 lead.
Ithaca broke the game open in the eighth inning with four runs to make the score 9-3. Boresta led off with a hit by pitch and W. Little followed with a double down the left field line. A Fisher infield error off the bat of Bailey allowed Boresta and W. Little to score to push Ithaca's lead back out to 7-3. S. Little then stepped to the plate and delivered a double to left-center. Both runners would scamper home during the ensuing at bat on another Cardinal error to cap off the rally.
The Bombers wrapped up the victory with two more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Boresta and W. Little led off with walks and then S. Little drove in Boresta with a single to right. Gallagher then brought home W. Little with a base hit to center for the 11th run of the game.
Fisher did not go down without a fight, however, as the Cardinals scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth. The highlight of the attempted comeback was a grand slam by Eisenmenger, which was his second homer of the contest.
W. Little went 3-for-3 in the game with three walks and three runs scored, while Fuoti was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Gallagher drove in three runs in a 2-for-6 day at the plate, while S. Little was 2-for-4.
Sophomore
Emmett Dunn earned his first win in a Bomber uniform in 6.1 innings pitched. Dunn fanned six batters and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits. Junior
Christian LaLomia tossed 2.1 innings of relief, while classmate
Matt Eiel finished off the game with the final out.
The Bombers and Cardinals wrap up their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
