Softball Splits on Day Four of the Sunkissed Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ithaca College softball team split on Thursday at the Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, Florida.
 
In the first game of the day, the No. 19 Bombers fell the No. 15 Roadrunners of Ramapo College, 9-3. In the second game of the day, IC defeated St. Norbert, 11-4
 
With one more day of competition in Florida, the Bombers sit at 5-3.
 
Game 1 vs. Ramapo
 
Ramapo got on the board first, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning.
 
Jackie Howarth reached based after being hit by a pitch before Krista Verrino drew a walk. Christina Brizek dove in both Howarth and Verrino with a double to left field.
 
Brizek then scored the third run of the inning on a Carli Egan single to center field.
 
The Bombers cut the score to 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning, starting with a Gabby Laccona walk. She advanced on a Skuraton grounder before heading to third on a passed ball.
 
Laccona was brought in by Vanessa Brown, who sent a single to third.
 
The Roadrunners had a big inning in the top of the second, bringing in four more runs.
 
Sisi Machinski drew a walk to lead off the inning before Howarth was hit by a pitch. Verrino loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, which led the way for Brizek to send a grand slam over center field, stretching Ramapo's lead to 7-1.
 
In the bottom of the second, Allie Colleran led off for IC with a single to left field before scoring on a Frankie-Ann McCauley double to center.
 
The Bombers added another run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Roadrunners' edge to 7-3.
 
Alex Wright sent a shot to right field for a single and advanced on a Hannah Peters' walk. Colleran then sent a ball to left center which brought in Wright.
 
Ramapo added the exclamation point in the top of the seventh with two more runs.
 
Nicole Hernandez singled to center and stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Machinski headed to first after being hit by a pitch before Howarth loaded the bases with a single to short.
 
Verrino drew a walk which brought in Carly Vadinsky, who was pinch running for Hernandez. Brizek then reached base on an error, scoring Machinkski to make the score 9-3.
 
Game 2 vs. St. Norbert
 
St. Norbert went out in front, 2-0, in the first inning, starting with a Carley Frauenhoff single to left. Amanda Diedrich then put one over the fence in left center to push the score to 2-0, in favor of the Knights.
 
In the top of the second, Ithaca tied things up and took the lead.
 
Haley Gaffney drilled a single to center field before advancing on a Rebecca DiSerio hit. Gaffney then scored the first Bombers' run on an Annie Cooney single to short.
 
Allie Colleran shot a single to center before Shannon Grage sent a ball to left to bring in DiSerio, tying the game. Ithaca scored the go-ahead run on a Vanessa Brown hit, which brought in Cooney.
 
St. Norbert's Ashley Zimmerman sent a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, bringing in Leigh Grall, who doubled during her at-bat.
 
Ithaca took its final lead in the top of the third inning after scoring six runs.
 
Emily Holden led off with a single to left field, followed by a Hannah Anderson homer to right center field, which put the Bombers up 5-4.
 
Gaffney dropped a single into right field and advanced on a Cooney hit to left.
 
Colleran followed that up with a hit to center which put runners in scoring position before Skuraton walked to bring in Gaffney.
 
Cooney, Colleran and Skuraton all scored on the following play in which Brown sent a triple to right field, pushing IC's advantage to 9-4.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Anderson drilled her second homer of the day, this time to left field.
 
The Bombers' final run of the game was in the top of the seventh when Gaffney continued her streak and drilled a homer over the center field fence, giving IC an 11-4 lead.
 
Holden, who came on to pitch in the second inning, allowed just two hits while striking out two.
 
As a team, the Bombers collected 16 hits against St. Norbert, which included three homeruns.
 
Ithaca is back in action on Friday for its final day in Florida. The Bombers take on NYU at 1:30 p.m. and Salve Regina at 3:45 p.m.
