Softball Sweeps on Final Day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Florida – The Ithaca College softball team swept New York University and Salve Regina on its last day in Florida for the Sunkissed Games.
 
The Bombers took down NYU, 8-5, in the first game of the day before topping Salve Regina, 9-3, in their final game.
 
Game 1 vs. NYU
 
NYU got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, starting with a Diana King walk. Samanta Sicignano drew another walk for the Violets before Claire Stefanelli drilled a shot over the left centerfield fence to give NYU a 3-0 edge.
 
Ithaca wasted no time pushing runs across in the top of the second inning. Hannah Peters drew a walk to lead off the inning before advancing to second on an obstruction call. Frankie-Ann McCauley followed that up with another walk before Nikkey Skuraton was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
 
Allie Colleran drove in the first two runs of the game, bringing home Peters and McCauley with a single to center. Skuraton scored on the next play when Gabby Laccona reached on an error by left field, tying the game.
 
Ithaca took the lead on a Hannah Anderson single to centerfield, scoring Colleran. Anderson then stole second which allowed Laccona to score to make it 5-3 in favor of the Bombers.
 
NYU added another run in the bottom of the second. Mary Tindall led off with a single to left and advanced on a Kymber Yamamoto grounder and was brought home by a King single to center.
 
In the top of the fifth, McCauley sent a shot over the centerfield fence to give IC a 6-4 lead.
 
The Bombers added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Anderson doubled to centerfield before Alex Wright produced the second homer of the game, to center.
 
Game 2 vs. Salve Regina
 
In the final game of the Florida trip, Ithaca put up eight of its nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Vanessa Brown led off with a single to center before stealing second. Colleran drew a walk before stealing second as well.
 
The first run of the game crossed the plate on an Anderson sacrifice fly, which brought in Brown.
 
Wright doubled to center and advanced to third on an error, which brought in Colleran, making it 2-0.
 
On the next at-bat, Abby Shields drew a walk before stealing second. Haley Gaffney sent a sacrifice fly to left, which scored Wright.
 
Annie Cooney drew a walk before Samantha Troetti sent a single to center, scoring Shields.
 
Troetti stole second to put herself in scoring position before Skuraton ripped a triple to right center, bringing in both Cooney and Troetti.
 
Brown scored the final run of the inning on a Colleran double to left, after getting on base with a hit to right center.
 
Salve Regina put up three runs in the top of the second, cutting IC's lead to 8-3.
 
Lindsay DelGrego headed to first after being hit by a pitch before Holly Kathios doubled to right field.
 
Both DelGrego and Kathios scored when Jaycee Garrigan drilled a far shot over the left center fence.
 
Ithaca added the final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a Troetti walk.
 
Troetti advanced to second on a Skuraton sacrifice bunt before stealing third base. Brown brought in Troetti with a single to right center, giving the Bombers a 9-3 lead which would hold until the conclusion of the game.
 
Freshman Beth Fleming struck out eight batters to earn her second win of the season.

Ithaca is back in action on Wednesday, March 21 when the team hosts Utica at Kostrinsky Field, starting at 3 p.m.
