Ithaca Secures No. 3 Spot in Liberty League Tournament with Win Over Vassar

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team locked up the No. 3 spot in the upcoming Liberty League tournament with a thrilling, 64-63, win over Vassar on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Bombers honored their four seniors – Jordan Beers, Allison Spaschak, Erin Woop and Julie Yacovoni.

In a fitting end to senior day, it was Yacovoni who hit the game-winning free throw with just 15 seconds left in the game to propel IC to the victory.

Yacovoni's game-winner came off a Cassidy O'Malley steal with 18 second left. The ball was knocked out of bounds by a Vassar player, but Yacovoni was fouled on the ensuing play where she hit the front end of two shots.

The game was a close one right from the start, with the lead going back-and-forth several times in the first quarter.

Yacovoni opened up the game with a jumper but Vassar's Sophie Nick would go on to tie it quickly for the first of many ties throughout the game.

Meghan Pickell scored on an and-one play to give the Bombers a one-point lead before Vassar once again tied it up, this time on a Nick three-pointer at the 7:20 mark.

The lead changed hands several more times in the first quarter before IC took a 23-23 lead on an Allie Tunick shot from behind the arc with just 23 seconds left in the quarter.

The Brewers scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to build up a 32-23 lead before IC put up points. First-year Megan Yawman ended the Bombers' scoring drought with a made free throw at the 2:19 mark.

In the final two minutes of the half, IC outscored the Brewers 6-2, to head into the halftime break trailing 34-30.

O'Malley drained a three-pointer to start things off for the Bombers in the third quarter and close Vassar's lead to just one point 34-33. Another O'Malley bucket put IC up 35-34 with 6:05 left in the quarter before Vassar took back the lead less than 20 seconds later.

The two teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes and a jumper from O'Malley with just 12 seconds left tied the game, 41-41. Vassar's Maeve Sussman drained a shot from behind the arc with three seconds left to take a 44-41 at the end of the third.

Yacovoni again made it a one-point game at the start of the fourth quarter on a layup before Nick drained a three-pointer at the 8:46 mark to give Vassar the four-point edge.

IC tied the game up, 49-49, with just over seven minutes left on a three-pointer from Woop and took a two-point lead on a jumper from O'Malley.

In the final 5:45 of the game, the score was tied up three more times. Yacovoni tied it up on a pass from Woop, for the final time, 63-63, with just 21 seconds left. That led to O'Malley's steal eventual steal and Yacovoni's game-winning free throw.

O'Malley led all scorers with 23 points while also recording three blocks and two steals. Yacovoni also finished in double-figures with 14 points, two blocks and two steals.

Meghan Mazzella netted seven points on the day while both Woop and Annie Giannone had six points.

Ariella Rosenthal led Vassar with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Ithaca is back in action on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Liberty League Tournament. The No. 3 Bombers will host No. 6 William Smith at 6 p.m.as part of a double-header with the men's team.

The winner of that game will advance to Saturday's semifinal game against RIT.
