SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team topped Union, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon behind two goals from sophomore
Alex Epifani.
The victory bumps the Bombers to 11-1-2 on the season with a 5-1-0 mark in the Liberty League while Union is now 5-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play.
Epifani scored her first of two at the 33:05 mark when she took the ball from goalkeeper Kelsey Hartsoe following a pass and put it away.
Following halftime, Epifani did it again, just 10:39 in. Junior
Gabriella Mihale played a long ball into the box where Epifani controlled and finished it to score her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Union answered back with a goal of its own just over two minutes later when Alex Cornacchi scored on an Erin O'Shea pass, cutting the Bombers lead to 2-1.
In the opening minutes, junior
Jenny Lidwin tested Hartsoe for the first time, but the goalkeeper made the save at the 1:26 mark.
The Dutchwomen then made an offensive push, earning a corner in the sixth minute and getting of their first shot in the seventh. Annie Gee put a ball on-frame, but senior
Sam Robinson came up with a big save on the line to prevent Union from putting a goal on the board.
Following three Dutchwomen shots, the Bombers nearly scored in the 22
nd minute.
McKensie Galusha sent in a corner kick which
Ally Christman got a head on, but Hartsoe made a diving save to keep the ball out.
Epifani then tested Hartsoe again in the 26
th minute in a one-on-one scenario, but Hartsoe made the high save. Epifani, however, would be successful in scoring her first goal less than eight minutes later.
Ithaca kept up the offensive pressure after its first goal, as Epifani sent a ball into to Hartsoe, who came up with another save on the day.
The Bombers came out strong in the second half, creating multiple offensive opportunities in the opening minutes.
Robinson put a ball on frame less than four minutes in, which was saved by Hartsoe. Junior
Elise Leavitt followed that up with another shot, 25 yards out, in the 53
rd minute that hit the post.
Christman then took the ball from 10 yards out and sent a high shot in before testing Hartsoe again in the 54
th minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Sara Jakobsze made her first save of the day at the 54:37 mark on a shot from O'Shea and sent it the other way. That play would ultimately lead to the Bombers creating the offensive push needed to score the second goal of the game and go up 2-0.
Following Union's score, the Dutchwomen wasted no time in putting another shot on goal, less than two minutes later. Jakobsze once again made the save on the Emma Schleimer ball for her second save of the day.
Ithaca continued to push on offensive, looking for that fourth goal on the day.
A corner kick in the 66
th minute generated a shot from Leavitt that was saved by Hartsoe. The Bombers had another chance in the 73
rd minute on a
Sarah Pirnie shot, but Hartsoe made the play.
Ithaca outshot Union, 16-7 with six more shots-on-goal than the Dutchwomen.
Jakobsze finished the day with two saves in the net while Hartsoe racked up eight.
The Bombers are back in action next Saturday, October 20, as they host RPI in the final regular-season home contest. Ithaca then hits the road for two final games against RIT on Wednesday, October 24 and Vassar on Saturday, October 27.
