Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downed by St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team dropped its second straight game on Friday evening, falling to St. Lawrence 72-66.

Both teams are now 9-4 overall with 4-2 marks in the Liberty League.

The game started out fairly even but St. Lawrence took a lead towards the end of the first quarter which it would hold on to for most of the first half. The Bombers tied, but St. Lawrence took a small lead and held on at the 8:15 mark.

The Saints took as much as a five-point lead with just over five minutes left in the first quarter before a Grace Cannon three-pointer dropped it down to two points to end the quarter.

Ithaca kept things close in the second quarter, keeping the gap to five points or less and eventually took a two-point lead following back-to-back threes from Allie Tunick and Meghan Pickell.

St. Lawrence, however, quickly took the lead back and went into the halftime break with a four-point advantage.

The Saints' Meghan Hynes started things off in the third quarter with a layup to give St. Lawrence a 36-30 lead.

Two free throws and a layup from sophomore Cassidy O'Malley followed by a Julie Yacovoni bucket tied things up at 38 with just over six minutes left in the third quarter.

Pickell tied things up for the Bombers, 43-43 and two free throws from Cannon pushed IC ahead of the Saints.

St. Lawrence tied things up again but three straight points from O'Malley gave the Bombers a 48-45 edge.

Cara Waterson added two points for the Saints to cut IC's advantage to just one point and that would be the last time the Bombers held a lead.

St. Lawrence slowly built up a several-point lead in the final quarter, but IC continued to battle.

A defensive block from Yacovoni led to O'Malley being fouled and netting two free throws, which she then followed up with a layup to bring the Saints' lead back down to two points.

With just under four minutes left, Hynes netted a shot which gave St. Lawrence a double-digit (68-58) lead for the first time in the game.

The Bombers came within five points with just under one minute to play, but the clock ran out before they could make a run.

IC shot just 21-for-66 on the day for a 31.8 percent clip compared to St. Lawrence's 30-for-54, 55.6 percent performance.

Three different IC players reached double-figures, led by O'Malley with 27 points. Yacovoni netted 12 points while Pickell added 11 points.

The Saints were led by Hynes with 20 points and Katie Frederick who scored 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

The Bombers are back in action tomorrow when they take on Clarkson at 2 p.m.
