NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Ithaca men's soccer team started the 2017 season on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon.
The win marked not only the first win of the season for the Bombers, but also Head Coach
Kyle Dezotell's first win at the helm of the program.
This is the first time the men's soccer team has opened up the season with a win since 2008 when the Bombers beat Medgar Evers 4-0.
All three goals between the two teams were scored in the second half of the game.
The Bombers' winning goal came in the 83
rd minute of play. Sophomore
Jack Monnes got a breakaway pass from
Jack Ochs and pushed the long ball past Wentworth's Matthew Sekerak in goal. The goal was Monnes' first in an Ithaca jersey.
The Leopards nearly tied the game with a last-second shot that went in, but officials ruled that time had already expired, giving the Bombers the win.
It was Wentworth that got things started and put up a goal first, less than four minutes into the second half.
Wentworth's Matt Cicalis scored on a cross and got it inside the right post to put the Leopards on top 1-0.
The lead was short-lived for Wentworth because the Bombers answered right back less than four minutes later to even the score.Â
Sophomore
Max Barish headed in a cross from Nate Schoen, tying the game 1-1 in the 52nd minute. It is Barish's second career goal.
Ithaca tallied nine shots including three from Monnes and recorded four shots on goal. Wentworth recorded eight shots, six of which were on goal. The Bombers also registered eight corner kicks while Wentworth did not have any on the day.
Ithaca goalie Max Lichenstein earned the win after recording four saves on the day.
The Bombers return to action tomorrow afternoon against Southern Vermont, slated to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for fans to follow the game.
