CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team wound up on the wrong end of a 4-3 non-conference contest at No. 8 Cortland on Thursday afternoon at Wallace Field. Ithaca is now 21-10 on the season after its third straight mid-week game, while the eighth-ranked Red Dragons improve to 30-7.
Ithaca fell behind, 1-0, after two innings of play, but knotted things up in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch that allowed senior
Josh Savacool to score, which was unearned. Savacool reached on error, and took two bases on another wild pitch and error.
Cortland regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth with a run-scoring groundout and added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Bombers got a run back in the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore
Matt Carey that plated junior
Domenic Boresta, who walked and moved into scoring position on a failed pick-off attempt.
The Red Dragons re-established their two-run cushion a half-inning later with a base hit after their first batter reached on a hit, moved up on a wild pitched and was sacrificed over to third.
Carey, who went 2-for-4, drove in his second run of the game in the eight to pull Ithaca back to within a run in the eighth that scored sophomore
Adam Gallagher, but that was the closest the Bombers could get.
Gallagher and sophomore
Andrew Bailey both batted 2-for-4 in the contest, while Boresta and senior
Trevor Thompson walked twice. Seniors
Ryan Henchey and
Josh Savacool, and sophomore
Webb Little all tallied a hit.
Junior
Jack Morello took the loss in 5.2 inning pitched with six hits allowed, three runs (two earned) and three strikeouts. Freshman
Tom Cosentino tossed 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits, while junior
Chris Marinaccio threw the final 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout.
The Bombers return home on Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader against Utica starting at 1 p.m. Ithaca will then play its third game of the series against Utica on Sunday, also scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
