ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 13 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team picked another huge resume-building win on Thursday afternoon. Senior midfielder
Morgan Cadwell tallied a free-position goal 3:24 into the first overtime period and the Bombers took down sixth-ranked SUNY Cortland 11-10. The win upped Ithaca's record to 5-1 on the year, while it marked IC's second Top-10 win in as many weeks after downing then-No. 2 Trinity (Conn.) by the same 11-10 score line last week.
Cadwell paced Ithaca with a game-high and season-best five points. Her free-position overtime tally was her fourth goal of the contest, while she chipped in one assist to finish with five points. It was her first game-winning goal of the season.
Fifth-year senior
Ally Runyon got back on track with four goals of her own, in the process moving past Shawn Benoiel '82 (205) and Jessica Welch '03 (207) for third-place on the program's all-time scoring chart. The four-goal run brought her point total to 208 career points. It also brought Runyon within six goals of tying Tracy Rivas '14 who holds the program record with 184 career scoring tallies.
Senior attacker
Morgan Racicot continued her run of three-point efforts, scoring twice and adding an assist. Sophomore
Allie Panara rounded out the scoring with two points, scoring a goal and chipping in one helper.
Junior
Kimberly Presuto got her first start in the Ithaca cage this season and performed admirably down the stretch in notching her third win of the season. She finished with eight saves in the game, holding Cortland to just one goal over the final 23:59 of the second half and overtime.
Ithaca looked to have things in control down the stretch. On the strength of a four-goal run during a 5:12 span during the early portions of the second half, IC turned a 7-5 deficit shortly after halftime into a 9-7 lead with 22:26 remaining.
Racicot started the run with an excellent move working from her 'X' position behind the cage. She faked the outside wrap-around and ducked inside the defender, before depositing a shot past Cortland keeper Jaclyn Beshlian to cut the Red Dragon lead to 7-6.
Panara and Runyon scored 18-seconds apart just a minute later to lift IC to its first lead since a 2-1 advantage just 4:30 into the game. On the first goal, Panara made a hard center drive, before whipping a laser inside the right post. Runyon added a goal right off the ensuing draw control, taking a long stretch pass from Cadwell and burying the breakaway attempt to give IC the 8-7 lead. Cadwell capped the four-goal run a few minutes later, making a hard drive down the left side of the fan and firing a top-shelf laser.
The Bombers lead did not last for long. After timeout by the visitors allowed time to regroup, the Red Dragons struck for two goals in 1:18 to tie the contest at 9-9 with 20:35 left. However, Cadwell answered with another go-ahead score off of a free-position to push IC back ahead at 10-9 with 18:55 remaining in regulation.
Ithaca controlled possession for the majority of the time left and looked to have things well in-hand down the stretch. Holding possession deep in the attacking zone, the Bombers whittled away nearly five minutes of game action down the stretch, even despite Racicot being sent to the sidelines with a yellow card with 1:54 left. With just a handful of seconds left and the SUNY Cortland net vacated, Cadwell picked out freshman attacker
Bailey Herr with a pass as the latter was making a horizontal run across the face of goal. The freshman looked to have the easiest of goals, but Beshlian came out of nowhere to make a fantastic sprawling save to keep the Red Dragon's slim hopes alive.
Beshlian quick-upped the ball to Cortland's Kristen Ohberg, who blazed down the right sideline in a desperate attempt for one final shot. The Red Dragon's attacker cut inside the fan and lifted a howitzer past the out-stretched stick of Presuto to tie the game with 2.5 seconds left.
Despite allowing the deflating game-tying goal, the Bombers' resilience shown through during the extra session. Ithaca controlled possession for the entirety of the overtime period. Cadwell almost had the winner just 1:13 into overtime, but her shot clanged off the bottom of the left post. Beshlian repelled three other IC shots, before Cadwell earned her fateful free-position from the right side of the fan. The senior midfielder took two steps toward the center, before lifting a shot over the stick of Beshlian and into the top-left netting of the goal.
The win marked IC's first victory over Cortland since the 2009 campaign, snapping a run of six-straight wins for the Red Dragons. It also marked the first time Ithaca dispatched Cortland since Higgins Stadium was opened.
Sophomore
Reid Simoncini had a huge defensive effort for Ithaca. She finished with four caused turnovers and seven ground-balls in the game, both marking new single-game career highs. Freshman
Becky Mehorter added a pair of forced turnovers and a ground-ball, while junior
Molly Long also added a caused turnover and two ground-balls.
The Bombers return to action on Saturday, March 25, when they return to Empire 8 play against Alfred University. Start time at Higgins Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
