Backed by Morello Gem, Ithaca Takes Down Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 5-3

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Ithaca College baseball team won its second consecutive game in California on Sunday with a 5-3 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College at Arce Field. Ithaca is now 3-2 on the year, while C-M-S drops to 7-7.

The Bombers rode a solid outing from junior Jack Morello, who tossed eight innings and allowed just three runs (two earned) on five hits. Morello also struck out one batter for his first victory in a Bombers uniform.

Ithaca got the bats going early on against the Stags, as senior Josh Savacool and sophomore Webb Little led off the game with singles. Senior Trevor Thompson drove in Savacool with a sacrifice fly, and after a base hit by sophomore Sam Little, classmate Andrew Bailey ripped a double to right-center to bring in the Little brother, which gave the Bombers a 3-0 advantage.

In the top of the second, sophomore Adam Gallagher stroked  a triple to centerfield, and attempted to complete his trek around the bases for an inside-the-park home run, but was thrown out at the plate to keep the score at 3-0.

C-M-S cut into Ithaca's lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly and error that allowed a Stag to scamper home.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Stags smacked  a one-out double to center with a runner on, but a perfect relay from sophomore Matt Carey to Thompson and then Gallagher, retired the potential game-tying run at the plate.

The Bombers executed a double steal in the sixth inning to push their lead back out to two run at 4-2, as Thompson scored from third and senior Ryan Henchey found his way to second.

The Stags would pull to within one again in the seventh on a lead-off solo home run, but Ithaca answered in the top half of the eight, as W. Little drove in Savacool on a single through the left side for the event final score of 5-3. Savacool led off the frame with a base hit and moved up to second on a wild pitch.

C-M-S threatened once again in its last at bat with back-to-back singles to start things off, but Bailey was called in to relieve freshman Christian LaLomia, and shut the door on the Stags with a strikeout and game-ending double play for his first save of the season.

Savacool went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored from the lead-off spot, while W. Little, Henchey and Gallagher all collected two hits. Bailey drove in two run in a 1-for-4 day at the plate.

After a 15-hit effort yesterday, the Bombers followed with 12 hits in today's ballgame.

The University of La Verne is up next for the Bombers tomorrow afternoon in La Verne, Calif. at 3 p.m. PDT (6 p.m. Eastern).
