McMillan Scores Game-Winner in Victory Over Vassar on Senior Day

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team defeated Vassar, 2-1, in its final game of the 2017 season.

Senior Shannon McMillan scored the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining to push the Bombers past the Brewers.

McMillan sent a long ball from 30 yards out into the top left corner past a diving Fiona Walsh, giving Ithaca the advantage.

Vassar struck first in the opening half, just 7:46 into play. Ashley Ferry took a pass from Amanda McFarland and crossed the ball from the top right of the corner of the box into the left corner of the net to take the lead.

The Brewers held the 1-0 lead until the 79th minute of the game when Ithaca pulled even. A foul in the box drew a penalty kick for the Bombers, which Kendall Cirella sent into the left side of the net to make the score 1-1.

Cirella's penalty kick led the way for McMillan to score the game winner less than 10 minutes later.

Offensively, the Bombers had several opportunities to tie and take the lead, as they registered 10 shots throughout the game, nine of which were on goal.

Ithaca continually tested Walsh in Vassar's net, forcing her to make seven saves throughout the game.

The Bombers had a strong offensive push immediately after the Brewers scored in the first half. McMillan sent a shot wide before another of her shots was saved by Walsh. A Reid Garner shot was blocked by a Vassar defender and a Kate Kohler shot was also saved.

Ithaca continued the pressure on Vassar's defense and made another run in the second half, which culminated in nearly tying the game.

A Sam Robinson shot was saved by Walsh before the Bombers drew three corners in a row. Robinson almost tied things up with a header, but it just missed the goal and sailed high out of bounds.

The Bombers also had another solid opportunity in the 81st minute, following Cirella's goal. Junior Shoshana Bedrosian sent a hard shot towards goal but Walsh made a diving save and sent it out of bounds.

Ithaca saw strong play from Sara Jacobsze, who subbed into goal for the Bombers after starting goalie Stacey DiGiorgio went out with an injury. Jacobsze made three saves in nearly 40 minutes of play. Her final save of the game, on an Ally Thayer shot, led to the Bombers going down field and scoring the game-winner less than 30 seconds later.

Statistically, Ithaca outshot Vassar 18-9. The Bombers also recorded 10 corners compared to Vassar's one corner.

The Bombers honored their five seniors prior to the game. Seniors McMillan, Cirella, Mackenzie Hinchliffe, Kristyn Alonzo and Caroline Matos compiled a record of 45-24-5 over the last four years and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.64.

Ithaca ends its season with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the Liberty League.
