Men's Soccer Falls to Vassar in Season Finale

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest to Vassar on Saturday to end its season.

The Bombers finish out the season with an overall record of 7-8-2 and a conference mark of 2-6-1.

The lone goal of the game was in the 67th minute of play on a goal from Vassar's Kevin Baliat. Hayden Van Brewer sent in a shot to the far right post and Baliat tipped it in for what would be the game-winner.

Despite the loss, the Bombers were able to take some positives away.

"I am really proud of this group," said Head Coach Kyle Dezotell. "We were dealt some tough season-ending injuries to a few of our best players this season and we never allowed that to be an excuse. We battled to the very end on the road with no hopes of making the playoffs. I thought we gave Vassar all that they could handle today."

Although the Bombers only got off one shot in the first half and Vassar took seven, the teams still went into the half with the score tied at zero.

Goalie Lee Folger made two saves in the first half for the Bombers, first on a Reid Smith shot in the eighth minute and again on a Baliat shot in the 42nd minute.

The lone Bombers' shot in the first half was from Marques Wright, but it was blocked by a Vassar defender.

Just 2:23 into the second half, Ithaca tested Vassar goalie Matt Marcelino for the first time, on a shot from Zack Lichtman, which was saved.

A Nate Mansfield header in the 60th minute sailed wide before a Nate Schoen shot in the 73rd minute was blocked.

Shots by Alexander Brosnihan in the 80th minute and Justinian Michaels in the 88th minute were both blocked by Vassar defenders.

Folger made his final save of the game in the 76th minute on a Van Brewer shot.

The Bombers now have one season in the Liberty League under their belt and plan to work towards being a top team in the league.

"In the end, however we end up finishing eighth of 10 in our first year in the Liberty League and missing out on the playoffs," Dezotell. "This is neither the standard nor expectation that this program will accept moving forward. As our off-season focus now moves toward player development and recruiting, I couldn't be more excited about the future of the Bombers' men's soccer program."
