ONEONTA, N.Y. – Four players reached double figures in scoring and the Ithaca College men's basketball team knocked down a season-high 17 3-point field goals as the Bombers outlasted Hartwick College, 106-103 in overtime on Saturday at Lambros Arena. With the win, Ithaca, which snapped a three-game losing streak in the process, improved to 5-6 overall and evened its conference record at 1-1. Hartwick dropped to 8-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Empire 8.
After falling behind by as many as nine points in the first half, the Bombers would eventually take a six-point lead as
Riley Thompson connected on a 3-pointer on a feed from
Matt Flood to make it 44-38. Hartwick, however, would battle back and closed out the half with a 12-3 run to head into the locker room with a three-point edge, 50-47.
Coming out of intermission, Ithaca tied the game twice before the Hawks scored six unanswered points to create some breathing room. Hartwick led by as many as nine points midway through the second half, 79-70, but the Bombers rallied and eventually took the lead, 93-92, on a pair of free throws from junior
Marc Chasin but the home team would connect on its free throws over the final two minutes to send the game into overtime with the scored deadlocked at 95-95.
In overtime, Chasin staked the Bombers to a one-point lead at the charity stripe and Ithaca never looked back. Leading by two points, 97-95, Flood drained a 3-pointer to put the visitors up by five en route to their first conference win of the season.
Chasin scored a game-high 30 points including eight from behind the arc to go along with seven rebounds and two assists.Â
Joey Flanagan finished with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting while freshman
Sebastian Alderete added 17 points and six boards in the win.Â
Carroll Rich contributed 12 points, six assists and four rebounds for Ithaca.
Overall, Ithaca shot 36-for-80 (.450) from the floor including 17-of-32 from behind the 3-point arc. Defensively, the Bombers came up with 10 steals and forced the Hawks in 19 turnovers. Ithaca also limited their hosts to 14 made 3-pointers despite the Hawks hoisting 33 attempts from distance.Â
The Bombers take on St. John Fisher College at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Rochester in another Empire 8 bout.
