Hartwick Snaps Win Streak for Women’s Basketball

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped at Hartwick College on Saturday by a 75-64 outcome in Empire 8 Conference play. Ithaca is now 8-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Empire 8, while Hartwick improves to 6-5 and 3-0 in the conference.

The Bombers got off to a slow start in the game as Hartwick ended the first quarter with a 16-8 advantage. Ithaca did lead; however, by a 6-0 difference over the opening 2:48, but the Hawks outscored the Bombers, 16-2, the rest of the period.

In the second quarter, Hartwick held onto its edge until junior Jordan Beers connected on a 3-pointer with 6:40 remaining to put Ithaca ahead, 22-20. The Hawks knotted the score at 22-22 with 4:09 to go, but Ithaca went right back up on a basket from Cassidy O'Malley just 14 seconds later. Hartwick netted the next three points to go in front, 25-24, but senior Ali Ricchiuti converted both free throws with 1:32 on the clock to give the Bombers a one-point lead. Hartwick would tally the final basket of the half with five seconds left to make the score 27-26.

Beers notched nine points in the first half, while Ricchiuti and senior Erin Ferguson each had five points.

As the third quarter got underway, Hartwick went up by three, 29-26, on its opening possession, and then Ithaca scored five quick points on a jumper from junior Erin Woop and a 3-pointer from classmate Julie Yacovoni to put the Bombers in front, 31-29. A three from the Hawks 18 seconds later put them back up, 32-31, but Ferguson connected on a jumper on Ithaca's next trip down the floor to flip the lead change – which happened to be the last lead for Ithaca, 33-32, with 8:09 to go in the third.

Hartwick answered with six straight over two-minute stretch and closed out the third period with a 49-42 cushion. The Hawks established a double-digit lead, 53-32, with 7:55 left in regulation, and held onto that 10-point spread until there were 12 seconds left in the contest, 73-64. Hartwick capped things off with two made free throws.

Beers posted a team-high 18 points on 6-of-11 from 3-point range to go along with five assists. Senior Shayna Gaskins also reached double figures with 10 points (6-for-7 at the line) with three boards and two blocks.

Ferguson and junior Erin Woop each tallied seven points. Woop also dished out seven assists with six rebounds, while Ferguson snagged five boards. Sophomore Allie Tunick chipped in six points, while Ricchiuti pulled down 12 rebounds with five points. O'Malley also added five points.

The Bombers struggled offensively, shooting just 21-for-72 (29.2-percent) and 12-for-43 (27.9%) from 3-point range. Hartwick went 30-for-62 (48.4%) from the floor and owned a slim, 46-44, edge in rebounds, although Ithaca registered 20 offensive boards.

Ithaca will look to get back on track next Tuesday, January 10 at 6 p.m. against New Paltz in Ben Light Gymnasium.
