ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 16 Ithaca College women's swimming and diving team continued to steamroll through its schedule on Saturday afternoon when it returned to the Athletics & Events Center to face Alfred University. The Bombers celebrated 13 members of its graduating senior class prior to the meet, before sending them off on a high-note with a dominant 248-49 victory over the Saxons. The win stretched Ithaca's record to a perfect 14-0 on the season.
It was a complete whitewash for the Bombers, who swept the top three positions in 14-of-16 events and the top two finishers in 15 events in total. The 248 points represented a season high for IC, while it was the highest dual meet team score in at least the past 13 seasons.
Ithaca opened and closed its afternoon with dominant performances in both relays. The senior foursome of Sam Reilly,
Grace Ayer,
Cassie Papaleo and
Lake Duffy paced the field with a 1:52.95 in the 200-yard medley relay. The second group of
Rachel Smertz,
Ashley Warren, Jackie Pecze and
Paige Landers locked in four more points for IC with a second place effort in 1:56.65. The grouping of
Geneva Bielenberg,
Casey Koenig, Alexandra Estanislau, and Genny Tripler came in third in 2:03.63. The 200-yard freestyle relay was again led by a senior foursome, as
Cat Tompkins, Reilly,
Erin Hackett, and Duffy hit the wall first in 1:43.41. Tripler, Pecze,
Angelina Domena and Landers finished second in 1:43.95. The Bombers added a third-place mark of 1:46.23 from another senior grouping of
Brenna Dowd,
Miranda Wingfield, Papaleo, and Ayer.
Dowd and Tompkins went one-two, respectively, in both distance freestyle events. In the 1000-yard race, Dowd hit the wall in 11:09.88 to take first, while Tompkins went second in 11:13.05.
Hannah Parbst added a third-place finish in 11:25.18. In the 500, Dowd added another first-place swim in a time of 5:27.68, while Tompkins again finished runner-up in 5:29.82.
The freestyle sprints were also owned by the Bombers, as they swept the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle events. Duffy once again owned the 50 free in a time of 25.21, while Pecze went second in 25.68. Landers finished third in 26.17. In the 100, Reilly took home the prize, pacing the field by nearly a full second in a time of 55.59. Landers came in second in 56.57, while Papaleo went third in 56.91. Ayer paced the 200 with a time of 1:59.95, while Hackett went second in 2:02.56 and Pecze took third in 2:04.13.
Reilly continued her big afternoon with another excellent showing in the 100-yard backstroke. She finished in 1:02.93 to take first place, while Estanislau went second in 1:05.81 and
Rachel Smertz finished third in 1:06.01. Smertz went from third to the top of the heap in the 200-yard event, coming in with a time of 2:20.61.
Warren, Koenig and
Kaitlyn Scott swept the Top-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Warren paced the group in a time of 1:12.05, while Koenig came in second in 1:13.59 and Scott took third in 1:16.27. Ayer continued her big day at the 200-yard distance, adding the breaststroke to the freestyle titles with a first-place showing in 2:26.71. Parbst finished second in 2:36.58, while Wingfield touched the wall in third with a time of 2:42.81.
IC went one-two in the 100-yard butterfly to continue to tack on to its point advantage. Estanislau came in first in a time of 1:02.39, while Scott took second place in 1:05.21.
Emily Altchiler paced a small field in the 200 fly, pacing the group in 2:17.97.
Kelsey Jepsen went second in 2:19.64, while Ginny Fimmano finished third in 2:30.64. Altchiler doubled up with dominant win in the 400 individual medley race later in the meet. She bested the field in 11.13 to take first place, while Papaleo went second in 5:02.52. Jepsen added a third-place effort in 5:05.91.
Ithaca also continued its dominance in the diving well. The Bombers swept the Top-4 positions in both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events.
Beginning on the three-meter board,
Katie Helly narrowly bested
Nickie Griesemer to win first place. Helly finished with 277.65 points, while Griesemer was right on her heels in 275.15.
Lindsey Suddaby took third place in 267.15, while
Cassandra Hoover went fourth in 227.65.
Griesemer overtook her teammate to score first in the one-meter board event, racking up a score of 285.30. Suddaby finished as the runner-up in 258.05, while Helly settle for third in 251.75.
IC returns to action tomorrow morning when it plays host to the Dick Comanzo Diving Invitational at the Athletics & Events Center. The full squad returns to the pool next Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. meet at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.
