Baseball Drops Tough 4-3 Loss to No. 3 Cortland

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team fell to nationally ranked No. 3 and defending national champion SUNY Cortland, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at Freeman Field. With the loss, Ithaca is now 13-10 on the season, while Cortland improves to 24-5.

Cortland put together a two-out rally in the top of the second to build a 3-0 lead. The first two batters for Cortland reached on walks and advanced into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. After a pop out to short, a single through the right side brought in both runs, and the throw home allowed the batter to move up to second base. That runner would come home with a line drive base hit up to the middle on the ensuing at bat.

Ithaca answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a single up the middle from freshman Andrew Bailey that brought in junior Ryan Henchey. Henchey reached with an infield single.

Junior Josh Savacool led off the third with a double to left-center and went to third on a groundout. Savacool then scored on a wild pitch to make the score, 3-2. An error extended the inning and Henchey made the Red Dragons pay with an RBI triple to right-center, scoring freshman Sam Little from first to tie the game.

The Bombers had an opportunity to take the lead in the fourth with runners on the corners and no outs, but a double play and fly out stranded a runner at third.

Cortland regained the lead in the sixth on a single down the right field line for the eventual game-winning run. Consecutive walks started the inning, and a failed pick off allowed the lead runner to move up to third. Another base hit knocked sophomore Tyler Hill out of the game as senior Benji Parkes entered in relief. Parkes got out of the inning unscathed.

Over the final three innings, the Ithaca offense was held off balance by Cortland's closer Turner Parry, who gave up just two hits and struck out six batters.

Henchey led the offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a walk, run scored and RBI. Savacool recorded two hits in five trips to the plate with a run scored.

Sophomore Tyler Hill took the loss in 5.1 innings pitched. Hill gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits. He also walked five and struck out two.

Senior Benji Parkes put together a solid performance in 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.

The Bombers head to Utica College this weekend, April 16-17, for three Empire 8 Conference games.
