Bats Explode, Diorio Baffles Canton in 16-0 Shutout

AURORA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team concluded its three-game Empire 8 Conference series with SUNY Canton on Monday at Wells College with a 16-0 shutout. Ithaca notched 15 hits with 11 walks the game, as the Bombers improved to 12-9 overall this season and 5-1 in the Empire 8. Canton drops to 7-15 and 3-6.

With today's win, Ithaca extends its winning streak to five games.

The Bombers put up five runs in the bottom of the third inning to begin the blowout victory. Junior Brennan McCormack started the rally with an RBI single through the left side that brought in freshman Matt Carey from second base. Junior Trevor Thompson followed with a base hit to left, bringing in freshman Webb Little, and then classmate and brother Sam Little drilled a three-run home run to right field to cap off the frame.

Ithaca extended its lead to 7-0 after the fourth on an RBI single from Josh Savacool and fielder's choice by McCormack. Carey and W. Little scored on the plays.

In the fifth inning, the Bombers scored eight runs on six hits to push their advantage out to 15-0. W. Little, Thompson, S. Little, Savacool, senior John Stanley and junior Ryan Henchey all tallied RBIs in the inning.

Junior Ryan Dougherty drove in the final run of the game on a triple to centerfield that brought home Savacool.

Savacool, Thompson, W. Little, senior Zach Cole and sophomore Chris Fiaschetti all produced multi-hit games. Carey scored and walked three times without recording an official at bat.

S. Little drove in four runs, while Savacool, McCormack, Thompson and W. Little each had two RBI.

Senior Brandon Diorio kept the Kangaroo hitters off balance all afternoon over seven innings pitched. Diorio scattered four hits and struck out seven batters for his third win of the season.  Freshman Cam Fuoti tossed the final two innings and gave up one hit with a strikeout.

The Bombers return to action tomorrow night at the University of Rochester at 6:30 p.m.
