Women's Lax Wins Opener, 15-7 vs. St. Lawrence

Freshman Allison Panara scored three goals with three assists and senior Riley Marion equaled her career high with five goals as the Ithaca College women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season with a 15-7 win over St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.

Junior Morgan Racicot scored a career-high five points on two goals with three assists, and senior Ally Lates added two goals with an assist as the Bombers (1-0) won their sixth season opener in the last eight years.

An aggressive Ithaca defense caused 25 turnovers against St. Lawrence (1-1). Sophomore Molly Long caused four turnovers, junior Morgan Cadwell caused three turnovers, and Panara and Racicot each caused two turnovers in the win.

Nine different student-athletes won draw controls as Ithaca won 16 of 24 draw controls against the Saints.

Ithaca also enjoyed a 38-22 edge in shots and scored four free-position goals, led by Marion (two), Panara (one), and Lates (one).

Junior Emily Ross, a second-team All-Empire 8 goalie in 2015, made four saves and allowed only two goals as the Bombers raced out to a 10-2 halftime lead.

Sophomore Kimberly Presuto played the second half and made five saves in relief.

Ithaca scored four times in the first 3:46 as Panara, Marion, senior Mackenzie Robinson, and junior Gaby Berne each found the back of the cage for the Bombers.

St. Lawrence got on the scoreboard 6:07 into the contest, but Ithaca tacked on six unanswered goals to seize control. Marion scored three goals, and Panara, Racicot, and freshman Danika Wagener each added goals as Ithaca took a 10-1 lead with 9:50 remaining in the first.

Leading 10-2 heading into the second half, the Bombers blanked the Saints over the first 16:40 of the second half, and the lead swelled to 12-2 on tallies from Panara and Lates.

St. Lawrence clawed within 12-5 with 9:25 remaining, but Marion, Racicot, and Lates added goals to close out the scoring.

Caroline Bailey led St. Lawrence with two goals, while Kiera Taussig added two scores for the Saints.

Ithaca travels to Cortland, the defending national champions and the No. 1 ranked team in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association poll, for a 4 p.m. showdown Tuesday afternoon.Â
