HOBOKEN, N.J. —Junior
Morgan Cadwell netted the game-winning tally with 56 seconds remaining to spark the Ithaca College women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J.
In a back-and-forth Empire 8 lacrosse game, Ithaca (5-2, 2-0 Empire 8) trailed 10-7 early in the second half, but the Bombers closed the game on a 7-3 run to pull away for their fourth straight win.
Senior
Riley Marion recorded six points on five goals with one assist, Cadwell finished with four goals and one assist, and junior
Morgan Racicot tallied two goals in the win. Marion also won three draw controls, Racicot collected four groundballs, and freshman
Allison Panara caused two turnovers in the win, which snapped Ithaca's two-game skid vs. the Ducks (2-4, 0-1).
Trailing 10-7, senior
Ally Lates answered with an unassisted goal seven minutes into the second half to pull the Bombers within 10-8.
Junior
Emily Ross then made a pair of saves on free position shots to keep the deficit at two, and freshman
Danika Wagener followed with a tally, her first of the game, to make it a one-goal game.
Marion's fourth goal of the game evened the score at 10 with 17:45 to play, and Cadwell found Marion for another goal to give Ithaca an 11-10 lead with 15:45 remaining. It was the Bombers' first lead since the 21-minute mark of the first.
Stevens scored on a free position shot to tie the contest, but Cadwell scored on a free-position goal halfway through the second for a 12-11 Bomber lead.
The Ducks scored back-to-back goals to seize a 13-12 lead with 9:32 remaining, but Ithaca hung tough and eventually pulled even on a goal from Cadwell with 5:47 remaining.
Ithaca dominated possession down the stretch, peppering Stevens' goalie Stephanie Schnelzer with shots, but the game remained tied until Cadwell's heroics late in regulation.
Following Cadwell's eventual game-winning goal, Ithaca forced a turnover, senior
Erika Johnson collected the groundball, and the Bombers ran out the clock to clinch the win.
Ross finished with seven saves to run her record to 5-2.
In the first half, Ithaca raced out to a 3-0 lead as Cadwell and Racicot each scored in a span of 1:15. Racicot added another tally 6:42 into the contest to give the Bombers a three-goal lead.
A free-position goal from Marion pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 12
th minute of the opening half, and IC's aggressive defense held the Ducks scoreless for the first 12 minutes until Stevens broke through for a goal with 18:01 remaining in the half.
Stevens went on a 4-0 run to tie the game on a goal with 10:16 remaining, but Marion put the Bombers back on top, 5-4 thanks to her second free-position goal of the day.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Ducks knotted the score with 6:46 to play in the opening stanza, but Ithaca reclaimed the lead when Marion set up senior
Mackenzie Robinson's goal with 3:26 remaining. Stevens closed out the half with a pair of unanswered goals and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
The Ducks tacked on a pair of goals over the first 1:17 of the second, but Marion answered with a goal just 2:46 into the half to slice the deficit to 9-7. Stevens would re-up its lead to three, setting the stage for the Ithaca comeback over the final 23:40.
The Bombers host SUNY Geneseo at 7 p.m. under the lights at Higgins Stadium Thursday evening.
